I heard a lot of people say that but, as a seasoned woman myself that has not been my experience. I'm finding it's the way you present yourself I'm not an old woman but, I am a middle age woman. Sometimes if you present yourself in an old way people will look at you as old. I'm not saying you have to look like a teenager but, look like you have some life in you. Not saying that's your case just speaking in general. 58 is not old if you're a vibrant 58 when you show up at an interview act like you're the best thing since sliced bread just don't overdo it. Be professional talk like you know what you're doing smile and speak only when asked. Then you have to realize some jobs maybe you are too old for that position good luck.

Yes, I am also 57 and have been unemployed for a year. Yet I have extensive office experience in every respect. Been on 20 interviews, including agencies, who are just a joke! Although I did get a 6 month booking, but I think to cover myself, will retrain into jobs that are adaptable to older folks, like us.

Security Officer at Securitas

Yes. I am 58 years old, retired after 38 years, and working part-time as a security officer to supplement my pension and have health insurance. HR refused me COBRA at the job I retired from. Anyhow, security pays poorly for unarmed posts and over half my biweekly salary goes to health insurance. I am now actively seeking a second part-time job so I can afford homeowners coverage on my house. At 58 the job market is brutal and very discouraging. I wouldn't mind working for a second security outfit, but most companies prohibit it. All I can say is hang in there. There are websites that specialize in jobs for seniors. Good luck!

Over 45 good luck finding full-time. People say its experience but... no. Employers want younger and then complain about not getting the work done. 3 months or less start with new youngsters. Thousands of us are in same position

Try teaching. They respect older women's experience and flexibility. If you don't have a teaching certificate, apply to religious schools. They will usually hire you without it if you have enough experience. OR you can work for them while you get certification. Also, if you have a Master's Degree in a specific discipline, you can teach at any community college.

I recently went on unemployment got one waiting week paid then the Dollar tree was hiring this is one in a million time i filled out a paper application and they hired me promising 26 to 32 hours at least a wék started with about 15 other people we worked 9 nights strait wich was great then gave us a week off and when i went back in the manager gave us 8 hours a week i and several people went to him and said whats up with this 8hours we where promised more he said he was AWARE that we wanted more hours and shut the door in our faces so its hard enough to find work when your 50 but to be lied to is a real slap in the face and unemployment says they can not help me either just because i was lied to was not there problem so ive got nothing comming in it stinks and im back a square zero!

Yes it is not unusual at all as one can hire younger folks at lower salaries and although there is a law against age discrimination, it is not hard to get around it. So I suggest you network as much as possible and keep up the search and don't lose hope. I have been looking since January and still nothing has come to fruition.

Hell yeah! Ageism is alive and well. If they can find someone remotely qualified who's younger, they'll go that way even if your qualifications are dead on. There's a lot behind it IMHO: fear that you'll only work a year or two and then quit. Fear that if you don't work out, they'll catch hell for hiring you. Fear that you'll have a 'senior moment' in a meeting and embarrass them. It goes on and on. I've had companies that admit that they have over 60% turnover per year refuse to even interview me. I end up substitute teaching, which I actually enjoy, but the money sucks. I'm qualified to teach two different subjects, and have applied for more than ten teaching jobs in two counties -- never gotten so much as an interview. Good luck, my friend.
