Scam on job hiring
I came across a scam on job hiring. This person claims that he represents a company as a consultant to hire an executive assistant to help out one of the directors. I originally applied for accountant but he said it was no longer available but executive assistant was available for a similar salary. Since it was a non-profit organization, he said he will send me a cashier's check to buy a few items for fulfill their obligation to foster child care organizations. It was suspicious from the get go but I played along with it. He sent me a cashier's check for $2,945 and ask me to deposit to my bank and send him the proof of deposit and he will send me the address of the entity that I need to send the items. He apparently got my name from the employment site and also knew the company that I applied for a job. He told me he will view my application one more time and sure enough I was notified that the application was viewed even though the accountant position was filled. Well, I called the bank that the Cashier's check was produced and sure enough, it was a fake Cashier's check. It was a valid cashier's check number but it was for a different amount and already has been cashed out. I am posting this because it is no longer foreign country like Nigeria with some surprised winning, the address that the check was sent from is in Florida and the name matches someone living in Florida. Just wanted to give you heads up that there are fraudulent activities in the job market praying on people looking desperately for a job. Be careful out there and call the bank (through your research of actually bank number not the number reflected on the check). They could trace the check but also find out how much was written for and other details of the check before you proceed.
Thank you for sharing this very important story with us, David. Did you report this scammer to the FTC yet? And it sounds like your bank is tracking down the fraudster as well. I'm glad you took the steps to stay protected!
