New Change
I have been doing customer service for the last 17+ years from security and call centers. I understand that I have an excessive background in customer service, but I want to do something different. I've also worked in several factories, but that was in the early 90's. So now I want to get back into the factory industries utilizing my hands and moving around keeping busy. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you want to be an assembly/production worker. Assemblers Inc, Pactiv or Zekelman Industries, Inc are looking for personnel.

Hi Gail,
I also come from a customer service background as well. It's sometimes nice to change things around and do things that excite us and keep us busy which sounds like that is just what you need : ) There are many different jobs you can pivot to from customer service. What type of factory jobs were you interested in? I noticed you have some experience with fashion design when in high school is this still something that interests you? Lastly, did you do any writing during your customer service jobs or was it mainly over the phone?
Hey Gail, The manufacturing industry is booming again in the US. Skilled workers are in high demand and employers are currently offering top wages to qualified applicants. American manufacturing today is more technologically advanced and computerized. Skills in areas related to numerical controls and blueprint interpretation are an advantage to secure jobs on the higher end of the pay scale. Employers are having a hard time finding applicants with these skills. To address this concern, the US government has been offering training grant initiatives to local non profit agencies and community colleges equipped to provide training and certification opportunities.
Bethel New Life, in Chicago, currently has an Advanced Manufacturing Training Program that offers participants the opportunity to earn three high-demand CNC credentials in lathe, mill, and safety. Graduating participants also receive National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) certifications. Reach out to the Bethel New Life intake office at (773) 473-7870 x 150 for more information.
The Chicago Urban League also has short term Workforce Development Training Programs you should ask about if you're able to make it out to the Job Fair on June 21.
Take a look at a sort list of companies attending and check for employment opportunities that meet your interest. Stay connected to this community for more job referrals, industry news, and feedback.
Looking forward to meeting you at the Chicago Job Fair this month.
