Staying Motivated During Your Job Search

Face it - the reality is the longer you are looking for a job, the tougher it becomes. Feelings creep of of despondent, discouraged, depressed and even bitterness. Heck some days you might not even feel like getting out of bed. If this is you - then I recommend you implement the following suggested ways to prevent your job search from getting you down.

  1. Join a job-search group - What better place to do that than JOBCASE!! :)

  2. Socialize with friends - do not isolate yourself and this can be a reminder that jobs do exists - besides you never know, your friend may know about available positions and upcoming openings.

  3. Pick up a hobby or sport - This can keep a positive attitude and give you purpose ( something to do while you're looking)

  4. Avoid the glass is empty folks - these folks place blame and have the victim mentality that will only bring you down. Stay away

  5. Surround yourself with people who make you feel good about yourself, who support you - family and friends who are positive and upbeat.

  6. Expand your network every day - LinkedIn is a great way to develop your professional network and it's a way to measure progress than how many interview you have each week

  7. Expose to yourself to media that inspires you - Choose books, blogs, magz, movies, tv that will uplift your spirits and remind you that the world is a wonderful place

  8. Try new job search techniques - This can mean looking up new ways to apply/interview for jobs, or tweaking your resume from chronological to function. Sometimes a different approach will breathe new life in your job hunt.

  9. Get a mentor - If you have one - get a second one. You're allowed to have as many as you want or need. Mentors offer perspective, advice or encouragement. ( I recommend starting on jobcase) there are so many members on the jobcase community who can and will offer the support you need if you ask.

  10. Ask a friend to play negative cop - this person will call you out when you're projecting negativity

  11. Find someone to report your progress to - This will keep you accountable and most likely to stay on task

  12. Get some exercise - Don't forget to take care of yourself during the process.

  13. Set challenging goals - Meeting a challenge successfully will boost your mood

  14. Learn something new - It can be work related or something fun. Learning new things stretches your brain and brightens your outlook

  15. Help others - Volunteering not only gives you purpose but it also an amazing upper. Who knows you might even make great new contacts

  16. Designate a week when you won't think about your job hunt - Take a break. Clear your head. Rest. Relax. Reenergize!!

Add to your skillset. Some temp agencies offer opportunites to learn a new software. There are also websites that offer 30 day trial offers on software. If there is a new industry you want to get into, or there are software expectations for the field you are in, look into getting trial time for the program/app, and add it to your resume. You can also do ebooks on specific applications, and add that with your free trial. Always look to increase your worth; that is the only way you can stay relevant. I always add software, or other skills that are listed for jobs I would like to have. Some you cannot get for free, but you can add it to a list of things to learn in future positions. The job market will always have competition, and continue to have higher expectations. All we can do is try to keep up.

These are amazing tips Stephanie K I especially love number 12 because you absolutely MUST take care of yourself when you are job hunting. It can be easy not to, but your health and mental well being should always come first! Thanks again for posting this : )
