Gaps in Resume
I have an 8-year gap in my resume. I was laid off from my employer, but fortunately, I had paid for personal STD/ LTD insurance that provided both income and an opportunity to be retrained. I started school in 2010, hit some hiccups along the way, but I am finally graduating this December (Health Information Management). How do I account for the two years before school and the fact that it took me five to finish an AS Degree without mentioning the Disability issue? I do have one response I can offer: I have a permanently disabled spouse that I have to assist. Should I use that?

Hi Cynthia - I understand your concern but no need to worry.
You want to emphasize why it was you were let go from your previous job. Keep it positive when talking about why you left your job before the gap.
You can emphasize activities you undertook during the gap to improve your professional standing. You can mention your schooling, but that it has taken you 5 years to finish because you are caring for a disabled spouse.
Hope this helps
