I won't claim to be an expert here, so this is a very general answer applying to any aspect of application development as I understand it. But my experience is that it depends on who your doing the development for, their expected development cycles, talent pool, and budget. You may wear many hats or just one. Many jobs like this walk you on the line between creative and technical. So while some companies will just want a truly creative and intuitive person to delegate trained staff to making a great user friendly experience, most will likely want you doing anything from pure design work to doing a lot of code. Furthermore, you might need at least a little experience in any of the tools that a given industry uses as a part of that development.

If you have the time and resources, General Assembly offer a lot of courses directed at getting people into these types of roles. Good luck!
