Question about interview canceled at last minute.

So, I had a question. I was contacted by a large company for a phone interview. It was supposed to be Weds. at 11 a.m. At 10:57 a.m. the company contacted me via their messaging system, Taleo(?) stating they were canceling the interview. No reason was given. I called the person who was supposed to interview me after finding her number on LinkedIn. She basically said she got called into a meeting. And then said she had to talk to her hiring manager. And then made a third excuse about other candidates? I negotiated my resignation/ termination with my last company. I am rehire-able. Would a company do a reference check before interviewing me? And could someone have said something to sabotage me? I know there is no way to know really. But did anyone ever hear of that. I can't believe this company, it starts with a K ( and they make "breakfast food") , would be so unprofessional. It was just the oddest thing. I wondered if anyone ever had an interview canceled at the last minute? Is there anything I can do to find out why. And can a former employer really sabotage you for no reason? My future depends on my next career move.

It happened to me many times (well over a dozen times). I have a strong feeling that a consulting company that I used to work for, their CEO is pissed off that I didn't want to work for them (I'm their high earner) and started spreading rumors among all his clients and black balling my prospects. Can't do anything about that - how vidictive some people could be.

All I can say is put nothing past nobody. In this employment jungle their are so many unethical people. They want you to be perfect when they are slobs. The interview is always first. Sounds like they just wanted someone else. Maybe a relative or friend. Look at it this way, is that the kind of people you want to spend your mandatory time with? Move on, sounds to me like they did you a favor. People like that will mess you over in the end anyway. Just slide you will be fine eventually. Beware of phone interviews and especially internet interviews, SCAM IS WRITTEN ALL OVER THEM. BLOCK THESE PEOPLE. Good luck.

corporations can do many things and get away with it. i would say ask for another interview if you get no response then they were told something or they found something out. to fight them would be s waste of time. move on to something else. goodluck

Employers do cancel interviews at the last minute for various reasons. No need to get worjed up about it.

Not to be funny,if that happened to me ... I would definitely think it had to do with an old company said something,or a reference you given may as well said something. No sweat, maybe that job wasn't it for you. Don't stress over. Brush off and look again.. Hopefully that may have been helpful.

I am over the hill and have gone on hundreds of interviews--I am a teacher. As the other entry stated, they could have cancelled for any number of reasons: a change in long range plans, the "budget" came up short of funds, or the hiring supervisor had other ideas. It could be for anything. I doubt that they did a reference check before doing a phone interview or first interview. They probably did not want to give you the real reason. The other entry is right: they do chnage their mind on a dime. They probably got hundreds of applicants. Shall I tell you about teaching interviews? They interview 25-50 people during three days and it is done through a panel interview of 6-8 teachers. Every 20 minutes, they ask four of us to go in and we all are asked questions in serial order by these six teachers--we are notinterviewed privately--we are interviewed four at a time. I think interviews should be private! Just maintain good rapport with them and move on to other companies who will appreciate your skills. Even in teaching, applicants are treated terribly--like dirt. Move on! : )

Unless you receive an offer letter and then officially sign it and send it back, I would advise people not to resign until they have confirmed they're set to go. As far as the cancellation, as many have said here, could be many things. Good advice to check with references, have them send you a followup email if they've been contacted so you are on top of the status, timing of how things are progressing. As to the rest, many things can change in a larger corporation. I would move forward.
