Don't know what to do..

I really don't like my job. I like some of the people I work with. My boss can be a complete ass one minute and then try to kiss it the next. The only thing that's consistent in that place is the inconsistency. And with all of my medical issues going on at the moment, it's not helping much. I can say, the COMPANY has helped me tremendously. The service industry sucks.

I can relate to your experience. The inconsistency is not productive. Sorry you are experiencing this.

Let's break this down, line by line...

"I really don't like my job" - Then what do you WANT to do as a career? Decide what you want to do and then get the education/training in order to follow that career.

"I like some of the people I work with." - Of course, that's always the case. But you must also learn to work with the people you don't like as well. It's kind of a requirement.

"My boss can be a complete ass one minute and then try to kiss it the next." - That's a pretty generic statement. That's how most people encounter their boss if they are working in a field or industry just to earn a paycheck. (See my first response)

"The only thing that's consistent in that place is the inconsistency." - Change is inevitable. It's the competitive nature of business. The business must change in order to remain competitive. They must discover or develop new ways of doing things to remain relevant. Another generic statement.

"And with all of my medical issues going on at the moment, it's not helping much." - I am going to approach this from two points of view:

  1. Your job provides income. Maybe not much, but it provides income. That's one less thing you have to worry about while taking care of your medical issues. If you didn't have the income, truthfully, how would you survive or be able to pay your bills?
  2. If you are working full time, your job is providing you insurance. That helps with your medical bills. The point is, having "a job" is better than not having "a job", especially with medical issues. Don't use your medical issues as an excuse.

"I can say, the COMPANY has helped me tremendously." - That's what you focus on. That's what keeps you going through the work day.

"The service industry sucks." - Believe it or not, every industry is a service industry. If you don't believe me, then name one industry where a service is NOT performed, yet the person or company makes money from that industry.

Hi Michelle, I understand and sympathize with you. I was in the exact same position. I had a supervisor who I thought was bi-polar. One minute she was sweet as pie and the next moment she was so nasty I couldn't stand it. I ended up quitting my job because the stress almost killed me. My advice is to post your resume, contact a recruiter and look everyday at websites until you can't stand the environment any longer. Try and stash away some money so if you find yourself in a position like me, you can quit without worry for a short time. Best of Luck!!!

I miight start looking for a new job. Take one for 6 or so months then look for something better while your working at your temp. job. Think about changing career paths.Ask HR in the company that you currently work for if there is any other department. Keep me posted if you can't decide what to do. may have a few tricks up my sleeve. Lisa Renwick

Rule 1, Do not quit your job. Keep looking, post a resume on any sight you can. Once hired, then give the proper notice and start fresh. Good Luck to you

Well Michelle sound like the job is not a place for you, first assessed if the job is the cause of you medical condition elevating, because from work will make you sicker if it is job relate, or not, stress will not heal a body into hemostat. and you will not like much of anything when sick, as gracefully as it can be said, find a job stress free(which will be challenging and very unlikely to find one), But find something you really like for you. to make you happy, It looks and sounds like try working for yourself. Just a thought

If your having medical issues and the company is good to you, you better stay where your at to your healthy again. Not all companies are understanding about illness. Most would rather replace you quickly with someone thats healthy. The company I work for is on a point system. Your given so many points when you start your job. If you sick a week mon- thur day you lose one point. If you sick on a weekend day you lose 2 points for each day. If your late 10 minutes you lose 1/2 a point. You earn 1/2 a point each month. Unless you have to have major surgery then you have to talk to corporate to have that cleared with them. They decide how many days after surgery you have to come back. A great deal of the time bosses come and go, or get moved. Do what you think you need to do while keeping in mind that some companies aren't understanding.

Maybe it's time to look for a new job. I don't want to ask what your medical issues are, since that's very personal, but you want a company who is going to work with you through them. Plus you don't need the added stress.
