Someone just called my boss about me!!!!!

yeah, I admit I’ve been desperately looking for another job but I never put my current work information on any applications or referral checks. My desk is right outside my boss's office and I just overheard him on speaker phone talking to someone about my work status, performance, and sounding surprised to find out I’m actively looking for another job. Now I have this to deal with today!! Are companies allowed to check employment without authorization?

When you apply for a job, it is not uncommon for the employer to check your background including work history. Talking to your boss and letting him/her know that you are looking for another job and why may actually help you find a better job and is important in assuring that they job that you leave is well filled once you move on. You're not alone. Good luck.

http://www.hreonline.com/HRE/view/story.jhtml?id=528968861 A little research goes a long way. tl;dr....not illegal to contact, violation of professional etiquette.

From my reading of your comment, they RESEARCHED where you work, and tracked down your supervisor. What a dilemma! They may be very interested to take such measures, but at least one person there is professionally untrustworthy.

No. you potentially have a lawsuit especially if you find yourself in a hostile environment, retalliation, or termination/layoff. Speaks volumes about the company you applied for and you need to reconsider that potential move.

Usually companies ask whether or not they could contact your current employer, but that said- -no need crying over spilled milk - use the opportunity to have an open and candid conversation with your boss. Let him know that you were just putting a couple of feelers out there because ....and then explain why you did indeed decide to look. Hopefully he would take the opportunity to learn, and hopefully implement what would keep you engaged and employed with him!

I don't know whether they CAN legally or not, but if you put "no", I think that that will put the prospective employer against you, because it will prob- ably make him suspect a skeleton in your closet. I quit at a curb service restaurant in 1972; I was very unhappy, because I had loved the job so much, but the boss had ruined it for me with his constant orders to me to slow down. (I had applied at other places and had not gotten a job at one of those, but I decided I couldn't stand to wait any more; once I was unemployed, I got hired within about 4 days); I don't know if any of those employers had asked him about me or not. He seemed not to have exactly expected it when I gave him notice, and I thought this was pretty dumb on his part.

I don't think that's such a bad thing Guy. Could be a good bargaining chip for better internal opportunities if you've been a good employee.

Most places have a spot on their applications they say may we contact your current employment and leave a place for you to answer so or no. I'm pretty sure if you don't give them permission they can't call

anywhere you offer your ss# makes you fair game. Maybe you can take advantage of any meeting opportunity to talk with you boss about what concerns you about the job.
