My Job Fair Experience
I’ve gone to a couple job fairs. I did not prepare for the first one at all. I had no idea what to wear so I had a wrinkled shirt and skate shoes with no belt on a pair of stained khakis. I’d printed 5 copies of my resume that had a couple spelling and date errors.. AND I’m pretty sure I gave every person whose hand I shaked a bath since I was so nervous. You could say it went terribly.
The second one was SO much better. I met with someone at my college’s career center to spruce up my resume, printed about 50 copies and put them in a nice padfolio. I picked out a blue button-down, matching dress pants & jacket, and shined my shoes. I even brought a small microfiber cloth that I kept in my right pocket so I could discreetly dry off my hand before handshakes. It went so much better - after following up with the few companies, I had two interviews lined up!
I would definitely make sure you prepare for a job fair. Trying to wing it WILL NOT work for you - there will be someone just as smart, and as qualified as you for the job who prepared more and will get chosen over you.

Awesome advice, Matt! You truly don't get a second chance at a first impression.

Haha great tip about the microfiber cloth - it beats using your pants and having to pay for dry-cleaning! Preparation is one thing I used to preach to my students. It's essential to walking into a job fair with any kind of confidence.

Great story Matt!
Prep is the biggest thing in my book to do before job fairs. It helps with confidence which can definitely help you land some interviews.
Thanks so much for sharing this Matt! I agree that winging it is not a good plan! Making sure to come in prepped and ready to go is always best.
