New sales job, got offered potentially better job a week later.

So I just landed a good paying sales position with an Internet, television, security systems, and satellite tech distributor doing door to door sales. I like the job because I am making very good money and get to be my own boss. However I could see it possibly becoming tiring driving around all day, walking all over, and sometimes I feel unwelcome at peoples houses,. I'm a bit scared that my sales will die down and maybe I started out on a lucky streak, although I have been consistent for two weeks now.

After going to a potential customers house and giving them the pitch, she gave her boss my phone number. He called me about a week after getting my new job and told me how impressed his employee was with my performance, and asked me to come and speak with him. I did and he offered me a position as an account executive managing a portfolio with multiple clients. I would be paid commission off the volume of sales/clients I have on my books, plus a salary starting out until I build up my book. I feel like this job would definitely be better for further building on my business, customer, and portfolio management skills. I may get paid a little bit less untill a year or two, but was told of the very great potential after that.

This job is attractive because of how many more business, management, and administrative requirements there are in daily tasks. On the other hand, I feel absolutely horrible for even thinking about quitting the job that I JUST GOT and assured my boss that I didn't plan on leaving anytime soon. What would you do if you were me?

Congrats Cody! Sounds like you've worked yourself into 2 great jobs!! I agree with George Ziemer- if you're convinced the second job will be a better fit, then that's the job you should take. Do your research, though. Don't take the job until you're convinced that the business is sound, that there is room to grow, and that the people who work there are happy. It's ok for you to ask to speak with someone who will be a colleague. (This isn't unusual.) If you're convinced the second place is the right one for you, then accept the new job, speak to your current manager IN PERSON to explain the situation, and go knock it out of the park!! Good luck & let us know how things turn out! Marijoy

Gotta go with your gut, Cody. First off, the fact that you landed a good job and found a better one while performing the first job is very impressive. You’re right, most door to door sales jobs are seasonal so you can expect peaks and valley saleswise during the year. The project management gig sounds like there’s a greater skill learning potential in areas that will be helpful to your career in the future. Leaving a new job for a better one is always a tough choice. Just make sure you give reasonable notice and always try to leave on good terms. Keep that door open in case you ever need to walk through it again. You’re going to CRUSH that Executive Account Manager job, Congrats!
