What to do next

I was let go from my job recently. The reason for the termination was quite vague. How do I explain it to my next potential employer?

Simply state that the reason for your termination was unclear to you.

If they provided a vague reason such as, "It's just not working out", then your best bet is to tell prospective employers during an interview the same thing. That you left because it wasn't a good fit. That you look for a collaborative work environment that values teamwork and where there is room for advancement.

This answer does two things:

  1. Gives them an answer to their question without getting into the fact that you were terminated. Wording it as such makes it seem like you were part of the decision to end employment.

  2. It shifts the focus of the question toward what it is you are looking for in an employer. Every company thinks they are are collaborative and value teamwork. By saying this you are aligning your desired traits in an employer with how they already see themselves, forming a "match" in their minds, at a basic level at least.

Although the best thing is to always say the truth, don't mention you were fired unless you are asked directly. Never speak badly about a previous employer. Say good things and tell them that it wasn't what you expected and that you will miss a lot of great people you met there. Say that you are focused on the future, learning new skills, new applications, and helping the team.

Kenneth, I had a situation like yours to a degree, but instead of being terminated, I walked out when I realized the conversation was going nowhere. When I had to explain this action, I just said that accepting the position with the previous employer was a bad business decision and was able to leave it at that.
It seemed to work.

Pray an allow God to direct you into what to say. An i promise you he want lead you wrong in no kind of way. Trust in him cause he will send his son Dr. Jesus to go before you when you go apply for your next job. I believe that he's going to do it for you. Dr. Jesus never called me yet and he want call you either. Just trust in him and he will prove to you that he's working for you. Be blessed and know that he is lord of all lord. Well, what did they tell you was the reason? I would NEVER say anything negative or complain about the employer as you go to interviews. Just say you parted ways.
