Opportunity isn’t Knocking!

I’ve been searching for jobs online and the more I read into the job descriptions the more I realizing that I don’t have enough work experience and skills needed to qualify for the job. Sure I have passion, drive, innovation, and adaptability to change but I just don’t think that’s enough to convince one of these jobs to hire me. How is that of any value to employers anyway! They all seem to want people with multiple years of experience along with a proven track record of accomplishment in the same or related job. I don’t have any of that yet. I’m not understanding how someone out of school get hired for a new job. The career counselors at my school have helped me with my resume and cover letter drafts but that hasn’t driven any calls from employers yet. Not sure what else I can do to show these companies that I can learn to do the job if given the opportunity. Any suggestions?

Opportunity isn't a door-to-door sales person. I have no idea how that term even got coined and became popular... No. We have to be the opportunity that knocks the doors down of potential employers. I remember the good ol, days when we could walk in with gumption and a smile, fill out an application, TALK to a real person, and often walk out with a job. Today's world of technology is making the job search process too impersonal and an overall pain in the backside. I can't put my foot through the metaphysical door of the internet, shake it's hand, and tell it why I'd be a great fit for the job. I could do that in the real world, but they'd tell me to go online as they were calling the cops.

Adaptability or ability to change is huge in today's workforce. Many say they have that skill but few actually possess it. Give examples of that on your resume from school or voluteer experiences.

What can you do for me. Companies love to hear that from applicants. Make a short list of ideas or possible solutions you would like to discuss if given a chance to interview. Don't be too specific just provide enough of a teaser to attrack interest.

Passion and drive are good things to have and showoff to employers when your looking for a job. Interviews are usually the best opportunities for that but first you need to get there. Keep working on bringing that excitement out on your resume and cover letter. Eventually someone will catch on.
