Background check

How many years back can a company allow to check Your criminal background? Also I gave my last job a two week notice ,but I wasn't able to complete my to week notice because personal issues I was told I will be put on the no hire list if I don't complete the two weeks. I told them I wasn't able too,so now I'm concerned about using them as a reference. I was considered a great employee before I left.

@Damian:

The length depends on the company but it's usually 7-10 years. Some companies might do 10+ but it's rare. However, the more address changes or residential moves you've done in the 7-10 years time, the longer the BG check will take. The BG also depends on who the potential new employer is contracted with to perform the BG checks, and how many others they're also running checks on. Some checks take 1-2 weeks, some checks take far longer. All you can do is wait, but patience is very hard to have. Best of luck!

I think background checks go back 10 years. Also, that is ridiculous! Giving two weeks notice is just a courtesy! You're allowed to give as much or as little notice as you want when you're leaving a job. They honestly can't put you on a no hire list for that.
