Customer Service Manager And Was A Cashier Before

What to do next?

I work for Walmart for 3 years, 2 as a cashier and 1 as a front end manager. I loved working there and still sometimes do. The company is really demanding. It can built you or break you. This month has been really stressful. It gets like that once in a while but I think I've reached my breaking point. I'm a person that gets along with everyone but it's getting harder to keep my mouth shut when I disprove on how other managers treat other associates and myself. They gave us a dollar raise but also put more for us to do, like if what we had to do wasn't enough. I feel unhappy and not myself anymore. When I come home from work I'm so tired that I don't have energy to play with my son or to go out and do things. I would always be smilling at work and i feel that i cant do that any more and people have told me to smile. I can't make up my mind if I want to just move into another position in the store or just leave the company and find another job. If find another job is the case, where do I start? Before Walmart I worked at a family restaurant for many years until they shut it down. I'm un experience in job hunting.

Cinthya, You have half of the battle won: namely, you've identified the cause and the need! Not to mention, this is a good problem to have; e.g., deciding whether to stay or go. By this I mean, you are still employed. As Sandra Parker, Gayle Gardner, Jesse LaPointe and Scott Shirai make mention: it may be good to look for something new so search while you are still employed. Matt Ramirez makes a good point if you can afford to do so: take some time off...

After reading all the posts, I'm inspired to suggest you consider the "Hospitality" market. With skill sets focused on customer service and customer satisfaction, this is a great market to sharpen those skills even more. When crafting (customizing) your resume for this market, you'll want to list two to three examples of success you've had to support each skill set you identify in your resume. Key words used in those examples will be what the search engines used by recruiters via job boards will pick up on; this will result in recruiters reaching out to you via email and/or phone.

Speaking of job boards, "ZipRecruiter", "Monster", and "Careerbuilder" are just a few to entertain. Your email will soon be blowing up! Not just from the job boards but from recruiters also as this is one of the primary means they use to throw out their fishnets to make contact.

Finally, keep your character in-tact. Continue to be the genuine, people-focused individual you are; looking for opportunities to help them succeed in their experience. Most importantly, continue to take care of your customers as you would want to be treated. The shameful employee/manager experience you're going through right now is "but for a moment"; it will "ALWAYS" change - like ebbs and flows. There will be good ones and bad ones. Don't trip: it's all temporary. So count them as mini-chapters to a good book you're writing with your career path!

You're in my prayers!

Front End Manager at Ralphs

I understand fully what you are going through I am a front end manager at ralphs. I have so much on my plate I don't know what to do at times. But since I know there is people who would love for me to fail or just plain give up it makes me work just that much harder. When I get off work I'm so tired as well. But I find a little strength for my two kids. Cause they don't see that much.I work 6 days 48 hours and I know it's tough

Pro Bono Consultant at Helping Haitians In Need

Hi Cinthya.
I'm so sorry for our situation. Clearly, this is a corporate culture and will not change. However, inasmuch as I'm sure you need a job, I'd start looking around for a better place at which to work. Don't jump for the sake of leaving but do exit when you find a place that recognizes good work and values its employees. With you experience, I'm sure you'll find a better fit! Scott

Well don't sell yourself short you have people skills and you have worked in a restaurant for many years . I would leave walmart and go to another retail store the money may be a little less but you might be happier . Try a manager for a restaurant you have experience and knowledge

Connection Center Sales Associate at Walmart

I worked for walmart for 6 years it's not going to get better if management don't change, when I started I absolutely loved my job then management changed got bad employees attitudes and the whole atmosphere changed. I advise you to start looking for something else while you have an income. I had a manager help me with my interviewing. My jobreferences range from store managers to associates. Always put 3/5 references down.

Start job hunting while you still have an income. I loved working at walmart worked there for 6 years when I started management was fantastic but as management changed so did the job atmosphere and employees happiness. Un less management structure is going to change it isn't going to get better. Start applying other places, I had some of my managers help me with the interviewing process give me tips and practicing.

Substitute Teacher at St Josephs School

When I worked for the DeathStar, I was asked by the HR person if I had any conflicts. I told her that (A) I had church services on Sunday, which is of GREAT importance to me and (B) I substitute teach, which meant that I had to have my mornings free in case a school called that needed me. They did what they could to ruin my Sundays (including making me work on Easter Sunday MORNING!) and scheduling me at all hours, making it almost impossible to accept any sub work. Finally, I got tired of that and went over my department manager's head and said "Church is IMPORTANT. I have obligations to my parish and myself. Please understand that." Eventually, they changed my schedule to where I would work every other Sunday and come in at 2 on the Sundays that I was scheduled to work. Another issue I had with them... I applied to attend Florida Atlantic University and needed to go to Miami to audition for a possible music scholarship. The application was done in March and I made the request for the time off in November. The request was done in June, well in advance. November rolls around and I don't see the request for the time off that I requested, even though I was playing by their rules. The excuse? It was too close to Christmas. My advice is if you can find a restaurant job that allows you time to be with your family and your son, TAKE IT!

Guest Service Attendant at Target Corporation

I too was a retail Front End Manager. I also got burnt out after 15 years. I think any large retail company will have the same issues. Try a smaller retailer like Kohs or Pennys or maybe a small private company. I am now unemployed because my store closed and happy to be looking somewhere else.
