Roger good that you want to be what I have been for over fourty years however several things you must have now days, Here is one Get some tools, you can't find a job without tools, number two if you do not go to tech school you will not get into the big money, the days of the shade tree are over. The new series of diesel and gasoline engines totally depend on computors and micro chips if you don't know these things dealerships can't use you , but there is a light at the end of the tunnel, see if you can get into a job as a lube tech at a dealership and express the desire to be trained as a thecnician, that is if you decide not to go to school which I think is easier but the latter can happen also, The last thing I can share with you is if you know a good tech. get in his head and stay there they can be one of the best learning tools out there because these men and wemen are there and have the knowledge to share with you, meaning private garages it may you working for nothing for a while but you are showing desire to do the work and it helps them see how smart and eager you are. This is what got me to where I am today dit it work? Damm right it did. Good Luck man

Hi Roger: Thanks for posting to Jobcase! Can you see if there are any mechanics in your area who would be willing to take on an apprentice? It's a great way to get the training you need! Try calling local auto shops to see if there's any room for an apprentice.
