RN
Hi,
I have been a RN for 16 years in the Atlanta area. I currently work at Pruitt home healthcare and desire to go back to school to become a nurse practioner. However, my current job doesn't offer tuition reimbursement. I really don't want to apply for a student loan. I am a Veteran as well. I enjoy home care because of the autonomy and flexibility. Any suggestions or advice?

Military usually offers some options that you can check into that should on that avenue to where to begin. Another option may be to start at local tech school until you can come up with the route you want to take. I commend you on sticking with your company and doing a job that not all of us can.

Talk with South University they have a NP program you can defer the loan payments until you are done with school and have a great paying NP job. Go for it!!!

Do you have the VA benefits for education? The VA pays for schooling when leaving the service.

if u don't have children. Go out of the country would be cheaper. my girlfriend got her doctorate that way. also if u truly have a desire God can make a way. U can ask churches to sponsor or businesses to sponsor u. it is wonderful u have a future goal. Don't wait to long...remember age is not just a number.

You could try doing as much schooling as possible on line. That plus the pell and discounts for military service should bring the cost way down. Then try paying off the rest of the loan through a work/ exchange program, this will also give you additional experience.

If you want to go back to school for a NP program, I'd advise you do Family Nurse Practitioner. It will give you many job options. I went back to school and got my BSN and the my MSN in Women's Health. I am STILL looking for something in the Atlanta are, preferably the north side. There isn't much to choose from!

VA may provide financial assistance

Look into the veterans programs at Junior Colleges. They may help you to do the degrees. I suggest Geographic Information Science. Lots of JOBS! Scott

Have you ever thought about using your nursing skills at a worker's compensation insurance company or a large insurance defense law firm. Many nurses are needed for their expertise in the medical field to review medical records, depositions, etc.
