Unemployed Librarian
Hi all. If I can't find a new library job or office job, I may eventually need to look into retail. I've worked retail for several years in my 20s,and it was fine, but now as I approach 50 I'm finding it hard to stand on my feet in a small space for hours on end. I get more muscle aches than I did when I was younger. (I experienced this problem when I was a holiday cashier last year). Do any of you have this problem, and if so what helps you get through your shift? Do you wear support stockings or back braces? Do you find these things expensive? (When I started my retail job, I considered athletic or special support shoes, but these were typically over a hundred dollars, which was too expensive for me in part-time minimum wage job.)
Also, with the graying of the American workforce, do you think any retailers might make accommodations such as allowing workers to have a stool to sit on during slow times, or alternating their cash register work with something that enables the worker to move around (eg. cleaning, restocking merchandise, etc.). Does anyone know if the Americans With Disabilities Act covers anything like these suggestions. I'd be grateful to get any honest work, but I need to physically be able to do the work.
By the way, I began my own Jobcase discussion list, and invite all of you to join "overcoming hurdles". I think the topic of accommodations may be a good topic of discussion for that discussion list as well as this one.

Hello Francine, Thank you for starting the group. You might be suffering from an Autoimmune related disorder. Do you have arthritis? There are some federally funded research programs that can provide information or refer you to organizations that can orientate you on employment rights and special accommodations in the workplace. Follow this link to find local resources. I'll look around for more information and pass it along. Have you considered looking for call center jobs in your area?

Hi Francine,
I personally understand the struggles of working in retail. I have been working in retail for over 7 years and I would constantly be in pain everyday. A couple of things that helped me was having insoles in my shoes and wearing some dansko shoes. They were comfortable and I found some at a affordable price on Amazon.
