HOW to write a resume that gets you HIRED!

Creating a resume that catches the hiring manager's eye can be hard. They go through tons of resumes, and you need to stand out from the pack

Here’s a few tricks to make sure you put your best resume forward:

Name & contact info should be big and bold! This is how they will contact you, and you want to make it as easy as possible for them to call you back! Make sure to not take up too much of the page, but it should be clearly visible from about 5 feet away! If the job requires a cover letter, using the same header with your name/contact info will keep your personal brand consistent.

Re-read and edit it! It’s hard to pick up on spelling and grammar mistakes on your own stuff. Once you write up your resume, take a break and come back to it in an hour. You could also have a friend/family member read it over and make sure that there aren’t any spelling errors that would make the hiring manager not want to hire you.

Keep it to one page! The average recruiter looks at a resume for ~7 seconds, so you want to make it short and easy to read! If you’re submitting your resume online, chances are that they will print out a copy your resume to review. Having multiple pages increases the chance of them losing a page - and possibly an essential part of your resume!

Great information, thank you for sharing this with the community Matt!! : ) I definitely agree that resumes should be 1 page so an employer can glance at it quickly and gain everything they need to know in a short amount of time. Having a lengthy resume could certainly confuse them or cause lack of interest. Thanks again for the info!

Wow! You should be a career advisor! This is spot on info - having a one page resume and making sure your name and contact info is easily visible. Cheers for sharing with everyone.

As an HR specialist, I cannot agree more about the one page resume. I don't need everything you've ever done - I want a brief summary of who you are and your skills. Then we can talk more about yourself and your experiences in the interview. This is really solid advice Matt!

Thanks for sharing, Matt! As usual, this is great advice. Especially the one page resume part, it's something that can depend on the industry and your experience, but having more than one page just means there's more information for the recruiter to look at in 7 seconds.

Also, making your name and contact info easy to read should be on more resume tip articles!!
