Staying Mentally Sane When Unemployed
Does anyone have any advice about staying mentally sane when conducting a job search? The longest I was out of work was about 8 months and I went through a whole slew of emotions in the process. Of course, I burned some potential bridges but eventually did get back to work. I know that attitude is most of the issue when at the job search. I want to know how people stay sane. I project if I can't find a job in the next two months that I will be out of work for about six months. How should I mentally prep myself for being out of work for so long?

Lance Perry Great question! I think the main thing is to keep yourself busy with something even if you're not working at the moment. Find reasons to get yourself out of the house and dressed as many days as you can. Maybe you start volunteering at a local non-profit or perhaps a quick jog or walk will help you clear your mind. Take care of your mental wellbeing by taking care of your physical health and hygiene. It may feel tempting to stay in pajamas all day, however making the effort to get up and get dressed will keep you feeling purposeful.
You may also feel the need to keep job searching with all the time you have without leaving time for recreation or social interaction. This will be a mistake! If you want to be the best candidate you can be, you don't want to burn out on the application process. Employers can sense desperation and stress in a candidate and it tends to put them off. Set clear goals and limits for yourself every day and try to meet them. When you meet those goals, it's time to focus on other things. Invest in interests, personal relationships, and health and you should be alright. Let us know how it goes!
