Looking

I am looking to maybe go to a part time job. I will be 62 the end of May and will start receiving Social Security. What are your thoughts on changing to part time and maybe changing to a less stressful job? #careers

Part Time Pack Down Team Member at Home Depot

Hi Marsha, I'm 66 and recently started working part time at Home Depot. At our age we don't need a lot of stress and that was a major consideration in job choice for me.

If you have other interests you'd like to pursue and don't need the extra income, enjoy your retirement! Remember, unless you have your own business, even a part time job can restrict your free time when schedules conflict with travel plans or other activities.

The only disadvantage I've encountered due to my age is that many companies want career-minded individuals for full time positions. You should be able to find plenty of part time jobs, especially in the retail industry regardless of your age, but they probably won't pay as well as what you may be used to receiving.

There are even opportunities to work from home but beware of scams--there are plenty of those--and never "pay to play" for any job offer. You might be interested in unusual opportunities you never considered such as those offered by www.dogsitter.com., www.Airbnb.com or its Christian equivalent http://www.gowayside.com. Most importantly, as others have suggested, do something you enjoy.

Health insurance is something you shouldn't overlook. Very few companies offer it to part time employees and Medicare won't kick in until you reach age 65.

Enjoy your well-earned retirement!

Dave

I am the same age. I left my job of 18 1/2 years. I have taken 6 months off so far. I think age is a huge detriment. I have sent a large number of resumes. Let me know if you have success in finding what you want!

I think that's great you should go for it. Many seniors are still young and active and less stress in something you like to do is worth the pleasure. Good luck to you in retirement.

Co Founder Ceo at Jobcase Inc

Hi Marsha, Thanks so much for being part of the Jobcase Community.
I just read that 60 is the new middle age. So "what are my thoughts'. My thoughts are no time like the present for a great career switch.

Maybe you aren't really looking for less stressful, but rather focus on more-enjoyable. I'd suggest thinking about what stress you arelooking to reduce? Office politics, less responsibility, different work activities? We are hitting a golden era for work-life where most employers are willing to give people a chance with career switches, and most employers don't practice age-ism in hiring practices (most, not all. when I hit 39 I had more than 1 person tell me I couldn't be hired for something because I was already too old! there are some jerks out there, but most people just want good character on their team regardless of what age). So, you should feel very empowered to consider part-time or full-time, similar industry or maybe a brand new one.

But embrace the options and thing about what kind of job would have you waking up in the morning anxious to get to it. I suspect if you really mine what you mean by 'less stressful' that you will come up with some exciting ideas to pursue. I see you live in Texas, so I know that a Texan can definitely accomplish whatever they set their mind to.

Well, those are my thoughts. I hope they are helpful. I am excited for you as you figure out a new chapter in your work and volunteer life. I hope jobcase can prove a productive platform to empower you as you do. Explore jobs. Ask other jobcasers questions. Ask friends and coworkers to praise you so that anyone in a career switch can see the larger vision of what you offer as a new employee. And have fun!

Good luck Marsha, and thanks for being an active part of Jobcase! #fred
