Discouraged

So easy to get super bummed out about finding work only gave myself six weeks to find something be hired and working guess that was a bit unrealistic I'm today's market but what else can one do but keep on going but it's so easy to get upset that I still haven't found anything yet but I have gotten a few bites but nothing definite yet. Keep praying and looking something gotta give soon at my wit's end not even a part time gig yet I'll basically take anything that comes my way but don't want to be miserable which will make just that much worse need it sooner than later everything is in a bad way holding on by a loose thread....

Unfortunately there are companies out there with no consideration or concern for employees. You probably would have come to hate the place. It may seem counter intuitive, I suggest you reach out to former offers and see if any are still available. I have advised others and they experienced success.

Open to New Opportunities

Hi Jennifer!

It's so easy to get discouraged when looking for work and coming up empty handed. The new processes online make the job hunt incredibly impersonal.

Make sure your online resume is updated and includes your contact information including phone number, email, and address. The spell checker is your best friend.

Some good online sites are Ziprecruiter, indeed.com, here on Jobcase, LinkedIn, and even Craigslist. If you read the paper, you can look through the classified ads for help wanted. It pays to think outside the box.

I'm also old fashioned and still promote the good old cold call. Print up a stack of resumes and a general cover letter, and go out into some businesses you can see yourself working for. Go dressed as if you are ready to work and ask to speak with the hiring manager. (Do make sure though, that if you have seen a posting online that you have read it all the way through. Some employers will specifically ask applicants not to apply in person.)

Most of the time though, employers have to dig through a lot of applications, and it's nice to have a face to go with a name. You may also get a motivational boost by doing this, by being proactive and putting yourself out there.

Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee how long it will take, but you seem determined and this will only help you in your search.

Best of luck, Erin

I'd suggest you update your LinkedIn profile, resume, cover letter with at least 4 professional references and update your personal profile on Indeed, Monster, Career Builder and any other job posting sites you might be a part of. Something good will come of it.

IMPORTANT INSIDER TIP: If you have the time each day (if not, do this at least once a week, SUNDAY is best), go to your profiles on the job posting sites, go to the edit field, remove your zip code, then RETYPE it back in and hit SAVE. This will update your posted profile, and move your profile back to the top of page 1, so when employers are searching for candidates like you, there is a better chance of being seen, rather than your profile being on page 30. The sites are designed so that the most recent resumes posted are on the top of page 1. Although your profile may be current, if you updated it 3-4 weeks ago, you could be on page 30. No recruiter or HR Hiring Manager is looking for anyone on page 30. By the time they've searched through the first 4 pages of those sites, they've already found 4-5 qualified candidates to bring in and interview. Updating your profile daily will keep it among the top of the lists. Updating it on Sunday night, it will be on the top of Page 1, come Monday morning, when the recruiters and HR Managers are coming in early searching for new candidates. Keep your faith. Sending prayers. Good Luck! Frank

Hang in there...I did some meditation on length of time it takes...let's assume it takes a few days to get your resume done, polished, reviewed, uploaded to the necessary sites. Then you spend at least 6 hours a day actively applying. You then have to hope you make it through the ATS resume systems. Then you have to wait for the recruiters to review their dashboards and actually select you and call you to insure you can communicate well and that you can actually speak to your resume. Then you have to hope you are selected from the stack the recuiter passes on to the hiring manager and then the two of you can sync your calendars and IF you manage to impress them, you will likely do a round of phone interviews with their inner circle. If you pass that gauntlet, you will then be brought in for the "face-to-face" interview process. Hopefully by that time you are competining with 1 or 2 others...if you make it past that state, you then have a final interview with the hiring manager's boss (the person in most companies that can actually fire a person)...to make sure they think you are a good fit. Then you actually get an offer and attempt to negotiate the best salary possible...in short...yes, it takes a while. I kept a log...I applied to over 250 opportunities in 4 weeks. Of those, about 20 contacted me for hiring manager interviews. Of those, I actually did face-to-face interviews with 3. So far I have one offer on the table and I do expect at least one other. It is hard and desparate work...

In Home Caretaker at Age In Place

What field are you looking in? In home nursing caregivers are in great demand. Fast food places are always looking for employees, a lot of plant nurseries are looking for seasonal workers and so are many of the farmers. I have never looked for a job more than a week if I was ready to work. I am willing to take a lesser position and/or something out of my main desired Field until I can find a better position and/ or something in my desired Field. I would apply for ditch digger if necessary and continue looking for a better job with every shovel of dirt I moved I would be sending resumes to potential employers and calling on any potential position that would lift my circumstance. If employers see a person is willing to work hard at a lesser position then they are more likely to consider them for a better job. Effort and initiative are as important as any other qualifications a person will take to a job interview. Show potential employers you are willing and eager: keep calling and and seeking. The SQEAKY WHEEL gets the oil! So start squeaking! Keep calling until you are heard!

Jennifer Conti There are a world of opportunities out there in "today's market"!! Perhaps your resume could use a boost. Google for sample resumes and templates specific to your profession to give you some ideas. Also remember to customize your resume to the job you are applying for. Good luck to you!
