I was rather shocked recently when a potential employer asked if I could provide my age. I think it was quite clear that I was an older candidate. Of course in my shock I didn't do what was sensible and I ended up providing my age. The interviewer asked why I was reluctant at first. I wanted to keep things civil rather than saying "This is illegal!" so I just said that it was "unconventional." Should I have just told her, "I would prefer not to disclose my age?" I don't get why age is such a big deal. I could kick ass at ANY job!

Not sure if that is legal or not, If you find that is uncomfortable try to find another job.

Mr. Ward, you are correct. It is illegal. I think you handled it with mastery. I would not wish to work at such a place. I would recommend that if they have an HR Department, you might consider informing them on how you were approached on this subject. And then to ask why you "seemed reluctant" with her? Was she a millennial? Everybody needs to get a life. The market is brutal enough just to get the interview. Do we really need to be smacked down and around before we even get the job? Trust me, if you do take the job it will come up again and they will use it to meet some kind of employment ratios for 89 days and then let you go. With no "thanks for sharing". Good luck. You sound like a class act.

Most oldet workers do...with age come experience, why do hiring mgrs not get this???

Your right your age has no bearing on whether you can do the job or not. Your more diplomatic then me I would have said they had crossed the line. I wonder if you have a case for age discrimination if they dont hire you? I would be looking into that while im waiting for the call before they say they went with anouther candidate p

Most jobs think that if you're young then you're more healthy, more energetic, and are easy to mold than a older person.. believe it or not the reasons suck but they don't say it but that's what they mean.. Or she was flirting..

we just had a presidential election and no one was concerned that the main candidates [bernie , hillary and trump ] are 70.

Well, as you know companies do not want people over 40 years of age. They want young college kids that know nothing of how to work, loyalty, and they can pay little to nothing for their service. Again if over 40 you ate as they say screwed.

I hope you got the job and if not then better luck next time. I really do not get why we are all so stuck on ageism. If I had a job that was shoveling horse pooh all day I would want a younger person to do that, they just have more stamina. Why would I hire someone who is old and cannot do the job? I just love those who cry to file suit or to turn them in the Dept. of Labor so they can get fined. Then they risk having their doors closed and not only does this guy not have a job but everyone else loses theirs too. Get over it folks. Save the lawsuits for someone who is really experiencing damage, not for someone who got their feelings hurt.

Yes I am asked regularly my age and my marital status. I went to the Dept of Labor and they told me if I need a job it would be in my best interest to tell them. Since then I shave 10 years off my age and I have been offered positions.
It is against the law If u do not get the job you can investIgate age discrimination. But I would look elsewhere to work good luck.
