The Debate - Being Overqualified For a Job

This topic is often discussed by job seekers and employers. Some may say this is not possible however, in my experience, this is definitely a reasonable proposition.

First, a little background on me:

I am Business Development Specialist with considerable experience in:

• Sales Operations • Client Management • Mortgage Banking • Information Technologies • Strategic Marketing

An aggressive, military disciplined professional equipped with the all the core competencies to have turn-key impact on new business production, sales and profitability.

How can one be overqualified for a job? Here’s my stance on the subject,

I took an entry level job several years ago at a local Savings Bank as a Customer Service Representative. During my interview, the hiring manager mentioned that I may be overqualified for this position. I laughed and said “I don’t think it's possible to be overqualified for a job”.

6 months later, after being fired for the first time in my life, I realized that being overqualified for a job is not only possible but potentially hazardous. Here's why.

It is difficult for more experienced individuals, or myself at least, to focus strictly on the job details in the entry level job description. My primary job function at the bank was to handle simple customer’s phone inquiries about their bank account(s), mobile banking and online banking issues. I often found myself vearing into other job duties such as Information Technologies, primarily on IT security and preventing debit and credit card theft. I am very knowledgeable in this arena with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and a strong working knowledge of most modern technologies.

I was written up multiple times for providing information to customers on how to prevent credit / debit card theft. Approximately 33% of the calls we received were disputes for unauthorized card charges. I felt that is was a strong value add to educate customers on how this happens. In fact I published an article in regards which you can find here: https://medium.com/@kevinpora/been-a-victim-of-debit-credit-card-fraud-42de7f4c8ba1

My supervisor often called me into her office and replayed the recorded calls telling me that the conversation should have stopped at point A. I went in to point B, C and D mind you with very well educated advice which provided a high level of customer service in my opinion.

I'm also well-versed in mortgage lending and tended to give advice on loan details which arose in discussion.

My primary job function was to troubleshoot the caller’s, problem hang up, answer the next call, quickly troubleshoot the issue, hang up, next, hang up, etc.

I am a quality versus quantity guy by nature. This job demanded high quantity with bare minimal quality.

To summarize, I came up with a little catch phrase. “You cannot fit a well-rounded object into a simple square”. Try all you like, it just won't work...

Me being a well-rounded professional with a diverse skill-set just didn't fit into my cubicle.

So yes, it is very reasonable for one to be overqualified for a position.

Kevin, I usually ignore these posts but your's resonated. Overqualified, at least for me currently, means too old. In your case it's different. If I can offer any advice, it's this: Demonstrate your ability to do the job for which you were hired. Then approach your manager and suggest that you have the bandwidth and skills to do more. It may be that they don't need someone to do more but you have demonstrated the ability to make a larger contribution. This should be appreciated and put you in line for advancement to a position where you can use al your skills. Having said that, if your manager is a dick then it won't happen, but why go the extra mile for a boss like that? Take the money for now and look for a new job.

I don't believe in being "overqualified". I think if you have the skills you can land the job, sorry.
