HELP! - need guidance from Jobcasers please...
Hey all,
What non-profit organziations help people in their worklives? Does NAACP, Urban League, AARP, Church, etc - have active groups for worklife empowerment that is actually helping at the grass-roots levels? Have you been helped?
We would love to know who we should be partnering with that shares our vision of empowering working Americans..
thanks, Fred

Hi Fred, It's hard to find non-profits that have a high rate of success in helping works in their work life. I live in North Carolina and here we have Goodwill they provide workshops to help with resume writing, interviewing techniques, they provide career counseling and a computer lab and also a place where people can receive messages and faxes. We also have another nonprofit organization that provides classes that help give insight to effective communication in the workplace, some beginner insight to understanding finances, and a computer class on posting applications, resumes and how to respond to job boards. It is a six week program that is half a day long. So it still allows you to work as you better your skills. Then you can pick an apprenticeship and learn a trade. They have construction where you learn 6 different certifications, PCA where your able to set for the CNA examine. All of this is at no expense to the participants. I have participated in a lot of the different programs that are offered here. So I have been working on my own nonprofit where we go a little deeper into finances, by helping workers understand their benefits packages, understanding their rights when they are sick based on business practices in North Carolina and with FMLA. So there are a lot of organizations coming out and that are out there. You just to be specific in what your looking for. A lot of the organizations overlap and there is still a need for more specifics so that's why I'm doing what I do. I have participated in each one of these programs and they have helped me to find my passion along with understanding the internet, search engines and how they can help you network.

A little clarification, please...what exactly are you looking for? Organizations that:
- Train workers to transition into new fields, careers
- Offer job placement to outsourced workers
- Teach people how to write resumes, network and find jobs at the entry-level
- Provide resources for active job searchers (e.g. Internet connections, counseling, etc.)
- Are targeted at special populations, like persons with disabilities, seniors citizens, inner-city youth, etc
- Offer moral support, groups for disheartened or challenged job seekers
I could go on...point is, what exactly do you mean by "worklife empowerment"?

Check out Tap Root Foundation they give highly skilled professionals placement with non profits. You have to do it as a non profit but that will put you in right direction.

Fred, I wish I could give you more intel as to non-profits that help people in their work lives around my area. My interaction has been with non-profit organizations that assist victims of domestic violence. However, I believe that in my area (Montgomery, AL) that Family Sunshine Center assists and counsels DV victims in some aspects of work life (resumes, interviewing) and they may be a resource to find other local non-profits that assist in this capacity in the State of Alabama. As to the question of whether I was helped by them, no. My interaction with them was during an internship.
There many different types of organizations that help in finding people jobs, like temp agencies, church - based groups that foster the spiritual lives of workers, ADAPT org in St.Louis, Mo, that helps those with disabilities.
