They may be anticipating that they'll be busy with a number of accounts or candidates. The reminder to get in touch keeps the door of communication open, but lets you know that they anticipate not being able to update every candidate they are initially contacted by. I would keep in touch with them, especially if you don't hear back within a week of your last communication.
