How do I make one skill/qualification outweigh another?

I have been driving a truck for a living since graduating college in December of 2006. All the companies I interviewed with always ask why I want to give up truck driving when I make more driving. How do I sell myself to a company that has a position that makes less money? The whole point of going to college was to use the degree eventually correct?

What is your degree in? Tell the next company you interview with, that you would like to have 2 skills driving and also whatever the degree is in.

Just tell them I took a job that eventually paid more than what I wanted to do. But money is not my objective doing what I love is the objective and I would love to be part of your team!

My suggestion is to continue driving, but during your down or off time seek and work whatever your degree is for. Perhaps in doing so an idea will come to you. Good Luck

Not in all cases, I have a Master's Degree from Seminary but I'm not part the ordained clergy. I think that Ms. Jackson has excellent suggestion. Just tell potential employers that you're interested in jobs with more stable hours and have more time to spend with the family. I've known some independent truckers and it tends to be feast or famine.

Mr. B Yes...my professor told me that a college degree is a ticket to obtain access. Express that your desire is to utilize your degree in your chosen field and do what you love...simple. Do not stop until you are satisfied with self or if need be...do the unthinkable...take their money and start your own business and become their competitors and see how quickly calls and emails come pouring into your inbox...prove the wrong by becoming successful...and don't forget to show those pearly whites as your soar to the sky!

I suggest you don't reveal your current pay. You just tell them the truth...say you want a change because you want to make use of your degree and don't see a clear path to advancement in your current position.

Congrats on your College Degree ! . I am really impressed that you have been a truck driver that long. My son's friend did that for awhile it's very hard work driving all over The United States solo. Now it's time for you to do what your heart really wants too. Tell them you were just trying to make as much money as possible to provide for yourself till you could find your future dream job & that is why you went to college, anybody can be a truck driver, it's time for you to get your future set up. Good Luck ! You Deserve It ! :)

I'd say be honest!! Whether it's you're looking for something without all the travel so you can spend more time with your family, or you want to be around other people. I think any employer will appreciate the honesty.
