Unemployed Librarian

Good morning, everyone. It's no secret that many job seekers still are experiencing the effects of recession. If we can't find work in our chosen field, we may eventually find ourselves looking into retail jobs. Jobcase has a discussion list called "retail," and I just posted to this list discussing the issue of the graying of the American workforce (I'm approaching 50), and the fact that older workers may need some accommodations so there is relief periodically from long hours standing in a small space with little chance to move about or sit down. Of course I know all the arguments about personal responsibility for keeping fit, having good supportive work shoes and perhaps a back brace, etc. However I know these things can be expensive in time and money for a minimum wage worker especially if trying to juggle multiple jobs. (I've been in this situation, but was still in my twenties and didn't yet have these deep-muscle aches and pains. When I had a holiday cashier job two years ago it was a different story, and I had trouble getting through a 5 1/2 hour shift with 15 minute break.). Any ideas or insights? Does the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) cover this type of accommodation (eg. letting workers sit when not serving customers, varying tasks, etc.). I'm happy to have any honest work, but need to be physically able to complete the shift day after day. Insights anyone?

Hi. I want to thank everyone for their advice. I hope the information on what types of accommodations the ADS covers will help me. I'll have more to read it tonight. I also appreciate the info. about resources for different disabilities, but couldn't find anything on autoimmune disorders. I'll keep looking. Thanks all.

Hi Francine, technology advances has made it finding relatively comfortable and affordable shoes easier but that’s won’t solve you’re concern in my opinion. You need to have circulation throughout your legs and feet so standing in one place for extended hours with comfortable shoes won’t unfortunately alleviate you aches. Look for seasonal opportunities on the sales floor where you won’t be limited to standing in one place and follow up on some of these other suggestions.
