Is or should age be a factor in getting a job?

I am currently retired and would like to go back to work. I am under the age of 60. I worked on my prior job for over 33 years. Should by age be a factor in determining if I can do the job? The jobs I have applied for are very similar to the one I retired from.

I just may be the droid you are looking for.

Although age should not be a factor, it is. The best things you can do are:

  1. Optimize your profile here at JC and on LinkedIn.
  2. Do NOT put any dates on your resume which can give away your age (college graduation, etc)
  3. Break up your long history with your former company in terms of positions. I'm sure you wore many hats over those years.
  4. Freshen up your list of professional references.

under the age of 60. I worked on my prior job for over 25 years. Should by age be a factor in determining if I can do the job? I can deal with all types of people from all types of lives. I'm very personable, efficient and dedicated to what I set out to do.

We all agree age should not be a determining factor. I find it frustrating that in the current job search you apply on line and do not get a chance to be interviewed so they can see that even if you are no longer young that you are still alert, energetic and have many good qualities for the job you are seeking.

Despite political correctness, discrimination occurs in job applications because they are put thru a computer filter before even a human eye looks at them (part of the reason most places require online applications). This has nothing to do with your actual abilities which you can only show in person. There is no place on these online applications to put verbal descriptions of job skills only choose from a multiple choice list what is similar to it. You need to put a very to the point presentation of yourself. Have a professional review done of your resume. Upgrade it to newest format. As for the physical presentation of yourself, get a special interview look in outfit, hair, makeup, etc. This is considered the professional look. Make it a look you feel comfortable in but not the everyday relaxed look, as you are dressing to impress. Now if you the kind of person who feels their look is fine, but doesn't fit what is need for where you are applying, then it is time to re-evalute your yourself and find a way to use your job skills different. Age has nothing to do with getting a job but certain job areas only want employees who will accept a lower pay and really don't really care about your job skills. These are the body hunters, research the ratings of employers by both present and past employees. You will find what employers really value employees and those who just need bodies.

Wow! A lot of replies to this one! Thanks to all the feedback you have received; I have just been given the kick in the tushy that I needed! Really....? Dye your hair.....? File a law suite? Hopefully, you are old enough to know better! Life is not fair!! I've been telling my kids this for years! In a marshmallow, fluffy world, we are all treated equally, but here in the real world, that is not the case. It can never be the case if we allow the human factor to play a roll and the moment the human factor is removed we,as humans have failed. Most responsible and knowledgeable companies understand the pros and cons of hiring age groups and dependent on their needs at the time of hire will determine not only on qualifications but a hundred other factors. Some of those factors will be relevant i.e. I have a crew of predominantly young people and absenteeism is an issue. I would look for a more mature and stable employee. Conversely, if my crew consists of mostly mature employees, a younger person might be a better choice. Sometimes we don't get hired because the hiring manager is tired, distracted, doesn't like the way we look, or a dozen other reasons. Lucky for us there are a thousand other companies that may want us!!! Keep moving, my friend!! Life is not fair but we made it this far; didn't we?

Let's face it, our equal opportunity laws are fictitious and cunningly applied. But if you can get an interview your maturity may be desirable to the employer. Stay positive and use your age to your advantage.

It shouldn't be but it will be. The same government that made laws against discrimination based on age, sex, race, religion.....etc. is exempt from having to abide by it.

By law, they "employers" can't ask your age but find ways to figure out how old you are. A lot of them don't take in the years of experience you have to bring to a position. Let alone the maturity factor and professionalism. Go in do your best and leave the rest to the heavens!
