Hi Thomeesha,

The advice in Mariah's response to your question is very appropriate and should be the preferred method in dealing with this situation.

I'd like to add that time is money. While money can be infinite, time is certainly not. If you lose money, you can always work hard to offset your losses. If you lose time, you'll never be able to get it back; it's non-renewable. Having said that, if you've already put in two+ years at a job, you've made a very big investment in your employer. Two years amounts to:

  • 24 months
  • 104 weeks (less any vacations)
  • 730 days (less any sick, holiday, weekend days) Assuming you've worked without any vacations/holidays/sick time/weekend days (I know some people who do this), you will have worked ~5,840 hours.

If your employer is not willing or otherwise not able to accommodate your needs, or has not taken the initiative to show an interest in your well-being and that of your family, it is certainly time to seek alternatives. Most certainly, this employer is not deserving of your skills, hard work, and dedication.

Wishing you the best!

Hi Thomeesha,

The way I see it, you have two choices:

  1. Ask for a raise and/or benefits; or
  2. Find another employer!

Since you've been at your job for two years, it's absolutely time to ask for more money. Go through your time there and write down all the successes you've had. Have you done anything to help improve the company? Did you provide great customer service? These are all successes that you'll want to bring up when asking for a raise, as it shows you're worth the raise.

If your employer says no, ask when you can ask again. If he or she doesn't give you a straight answer, it's time to move on. Don't feel loyal to an employer who doesn't value employees. Since you already have a job, you can take your time looking for the right employer, since you're still making an income.

Let us know how it works out for you!

It doesn't sound like your employer takes stock in their employees, I would recommend getting another job. Keep that one until you find one. When searching make sure you don't just settle get a job that offers what you are looking for. Good luck
