Racist clients

I'm a black woman. I recently took a new nursing assignment through an agency I've been with for almost a year. My recruiter thinks highly of me and told me I'd be a "good fit". Today I spoke with my recruiter and she asked me if I were having any issues which I thought was odd because why would I be. She goes on to say that the family of the clients I care for are racist and has a preference for white nurses. She never even told the family that I was black, so there I was meeting these people for the first time not knowing they had a bias against me. The family of the clients have been around quite often, they haven't been rude but it's still upsetting that my recruiter would put me in this kind of predicament. I don't care that these people are racist.. I'm very happy with the skin I'm in, but I would not have chose to work for them and in their home at that! The energy felt a bit off at times but I didn't know why but what I do know is that racists are good at hiding it when it's convenient. My recruiter asked that I not behave any differently and would like for me to keep the assignment since there aren't any blatant problems. I think I should walk away from it, these people are faking as though they like me only because I do a great job. It will feel forced and awkward, I can't ignore that and I will not be a token black woman. Thoughts?

Hi Candice taylor , I'm sorry that you've been put into this tough situation. If you are not comfortable in your placement, then I would highly recommend you ask about options to transfer. No one should ever feel uneasy at work, especially when you're working so closely with your clients.

Keep us updated! Good luck, Candice.
