Baffled by the last turn down for a position I know I'm qualified.
I'm really baffled on why I was not selected for a Communications Marketing position at a small bank here in Oklahoma. I felt like I had a strong interview, followed up with both a thank you email (the day of) and hand written thank you a few days later. This was a smaller bank in Oklahoma that specializes in the agriculture industry. They did state they wanted someone, trasparent, who could talk to the bank teller the same as the CEO. I do consider myself that way and sold myself that way. I have worked for very small companies to very large corporations. I would like to think I hadn't lost my country girl charm.
I know that we should not try to overanalyze these situations, as jobseekers, we may never have the true answer. I have reflected and the only things I can come up with are the following: a)I'm over qualified (in their eyes) with15-20 yrs of experience. I will admit I felt like it was time I should be doing the director's job. Nevertheless, I would gladly take on their assistant role to learn more about the communications industry and prove myself at the company. b) They stated they wanted an emphasis on communication, not just a designer. I feel that I really excelled at communication as my last role as a UI/UX designer (gathering requirements for numerous depts in a large corporation) to redesign a large payroll application. I honestly felt more like a consultant in the beginning stages of the position and enjoyed it! So, I sold these skills in the interview. Could it be they were still intimidated by all of the design experience on my résume?
c)Age bias, discrimination. I'm early 40's going on 25. It did cross my mind they may want to hire someone right out of school with no experience simply so they can pay them less.
Thoughts?
Sounds like you did everything right! If I had to guess, I would choose they wanted someone they could pay less....they may think you are "over-qualified" for the job. Keep doing what you're doing though, and you'll find something great!!
