Cashier at Whataburger

I have just been promoted at my job and I have been with the company for three years now, I have a felony that I was convicted of and placed on probation in 2012. Will it still affect me when they do the background check?

I'm pretty sure they did a background check when you were first hired. It's been three years. If they gave you the promotion, I doubt anything will mess that up.

Congrats on your promotion @LaMouria Lloyd !! WOW, that's awesome news. I wouldn't be too concerned about another background check. Your new hire process three years ago would have included a background investigation that included at least a 10 year history where your 2012 probation would have come up.

The fact that you were hired, worked for three years and considered worthy of a promotion based on your performance is a good indicator that you're a quality candidate for a higher position within the company.

I'm not an HR expert but based on my work experience I think you are okay. I'll go ahead and tag my new hero and Human Resources professional @Cheryl Stewart and ask her to share some light on this matter. I think you're okay but it doesn't hurt to seek out more qualified opinion.

Keep us updated on your promotion status and when you're expected to start on your new role. Happy for you @LaMouria Lloyd :-)

A lot of background checks only go back 7 years. Unless it’s for a government job. If it comes up be honest and explain how you have changed since the situation. Good luck!

It just depends on what state you work in. Some stated have stricter laws on background checks with your pay grade and how many years they can go back. If salary is a high pay then some states allowed to hold it against you depending on what the charge is it doesn't matter how old it is. My bf has theft charges that are over 12yrs and still cant get retail jobs. And its not a retail theft charge.

I think depending on what kind of felony you have it shouldn't be a problem. It's been almost 10 years.

If you lied on your application and said you had no criminal record, that would be reason to fire you. Often depends on the employer, what crime you committed, how long ago it was, if the crime would be something that could happen in the position you have now. Example, crime was embezzlement and now you would have more access to financial info or systems.
