Hello all,

I'm looking for a career mentor as I'm interested in changing my career into something more coding related. I'm starting to take courses online on programming but was looking for someone currently in the business that could give me some ideas on how to get started being an independent consultant and what the field to get into would be. I have many questions and not many people I can talk to. Any ideas or guidance would be appreciated

Why would I be a career mentor when I do not get paid?

I have seen a lot of responses from the hiring side of the medical field -- especially hospitals and research entities. They need people to handle the computer side of their job. Check with their employment offices.

I'd love to be able to help you, but, unfortunately, I'm in the same boat. I've got magnanimous programming aptitude but limited knowledge. I've had Pascal, C#, javascript, Python & the like, but I'm having a lot of difficulty finding a local program that will teach me R, & it seems to be what all of the experts think that I need.

Make sure that this is a move you want to make. Also be sure that you have a network to get to where you want to go in the job market. Hopefully you are still young enough to make the jump. After a certain age it becomes harder to find work. My experience is that potential employers can look at you as a threat to them, because you have background. Good luck on your journey.
