I am planning to leave my job as soon as I find a new one, and was curious as to what others have done when leaving their jobs when it came to documents/files and emails that are on your company computers or email systems. Obviously I want to save contacts and some of the emails that I may have use of down the line, but is it ok to make copies of such things from a company system and hold onto them? Do you just delete everything on your last day? Just curious as to folks thoughts and opinions.

Dennis, This is a good question for a HR pro but in my experience once you hand over resignation info the company’s goal is to get you out of the position as soon as possible. In some cases sooner rather than later especially if the it's based on hostile terms. I would ask someone in management or HR before removing or copying files just to avoid future repercussions. I’m sure they have their own process of wiping data but it’s safer to check beforehand. Sorry to hear you’re thinking of leaving the job… hopefully for a better one!
