Offer Extended to me from Bank of America (feeling happy and discouraged)

Hello Y'all,

I hope everyone is doing well. I wanted to share:

Yesterday, I interviewed for a position with Bank of America, for a Collections & Recovery Specialist (Business Division.) In the interview the person interviewing me, and I agreed, I was probably over-qualified. However, we discussed the fact that the position is entry-level, it was a way to get my foot in the door. She really liked my experience and told me that after the 6-month contract, you typically get hired and who is to say where I can go. My background is in the legal field and being a corporate/sales software trainer. She mentioned how impressive this was. She is a manager now and told me she started in the same seat I was sitting in and that I would bring a lot to the table for advancement.

I was extended an offer this morning.

Here are the Pro’s:

  1. Pay’s better than unemployment

  2. Job will help fill-in my gap of not working, due to caring for my mom.

  3. Offer’s Overtime/bonuses and the hours are from 11:00 am – 8:00 pm.

  4. This location is one of the Corporate Operations offices and is located 6 MILES away from home!! Living in California, I can tell you this is the closest I have been to home! Usually commutes take about 3 hours a day via car/trains, etc.

  5. Left my company in January to care for my mom, as she became terminal and have been off work since. I have had time to grieve her loss and I can’t help but think, it will do me some good to get back to a work environment and fill my days up once again.

Here are the Con’s:

  1. Pay’s ½ of what I made in my last job. About $30,000 less. (Very discouraging, yet I think I can be frugal and make it until something changes.)

  2. I have about 12 weeks of unemployment left.

The company I interviewed with on 10/31 (healthcare trainer), had to delay the final interviews for this position. I really hope and pray this one will come to me. I was notified I was still being considered and will probably not have the final decision until a few weeks from now.

I will continue to keep looking and trust if nothing else comes through, I will start this new job on 1/7/19 and make the best of it and just believe my journey will improve for the better. I keep landing as the runner-up and I now got to be the number 1 choice.

I'm happy and discouraged about the pay, what a feeling! I have been looking and interviewing and have turned downed low paying jobs. Something told me to accept the offer and trust the process.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Cindy

I would say passing this offer up would be a huge backslide. Besides the pay, it let's you ease back into the work force without a huge pile of stress on your shoulders. Plus, you will have that 6 month warm up period to decide if you want to climb that corporate ladder or move on to another business. It's always easier to get a job when you have a job.

Lenin, thanks for your words to me! I have to say when I walked into the building for the interview, I felt like I was at home! Reminded me of my long term employment with Jones Day, Global Law firm and the opportunities it gave me, even when I started on the bottom floor and moved upwards in my career with them! I do think it is worth giving it my 110%. I feel there is lots of opportunities and I can commit to the 6 month contract and see where it takes me. I will give this position all I got! I still have one outstanding interview results coming in the next few weeks. I'm tired of being the 2nd place to a job and now I made it the 1st place! You gave me what I needed to hear today!! Thanks again for being there for me.

Hi Cindy Lane First off, Congratulations on landing this job offer! The fact that a recruiter for a company like Bank of America is willing to extend a job offer to you despite the fact that you're clearly overqualified for the job is quite an accomplishment. That just simply doesn’t happen anymore! It’s obvious she saw a potential in your interview presentation that makes you great fit within the Bank of America culture. It’s always a tremendous career and workplace benefit when your potential new employers are excited about having you on their team. You’re the new Rockstar!

You, however, don’t sound sold on the opportunity and understandably so because the pay differential is significant. Your Pro’s point out certain conveniences and perks about the job but do very little to point out your passion for the job itself and your excitement over the growth opportunities. Is there anything about the Collections & Recovery Specialist job that excites you? Where do you see yourself after the first year?

Taking on a new job when your heart's not fully into it could be a recipe for disaster. Now, don’t get me wrong, I understand strenuous life circumstances and responsibilities will lead us to take on less than perfect job opportunities. Workplace happiness becomes less of a priority when one’s faced with foreclosure and a family to take of. Carefully consider your circumstances, can you go another 3-6 months of unemployment while you continue to look for a better job opportunity? Other members have taken this risk and succeeded , see Angela Fisher post Hang in there! yet others have not been so successful.

Banking entry level jobs have always been traditionally on the lower end but I have to agree with your recruiter because it’s one of the very few industries that still offers quality employees solid career track progression opportunities. The benefits packages are also very comprehensive which means good health and wealth management options. The banking industry isn’t all about finance either. Real Estate, Legal, Training, Commercial Lending, and Community Development are other industries intertwined within banking. It all depends how clear you see yourself transitioning into a legal or training role from this entry level position.

You can also accept this job while you continue to search for a better job opportunity but approach this strategy carefully. After all you want your word to mean something right? I think you have the potential and drive to grow within that organization as long as your hearts into it. Follow your heart with this one Cindy Lane .

Please make sure that whatever you decide to do with this job offer your decision is made with 100% conviction.

Remember job offers are great things so don’t forget to pat yourself on the back for this Awesome Accomplishment.

Have a Good Weekend! :-)
