Does this improve my chances?
I really want to work in the healthcare field as an MA, but the competition is strong out there. I’ve been thinking about volunteering at my local hospital as a way of improving how my resume looks to employers. Has anyone done this before? Is volunteering a good way to impress employers?

If you are a new graduate, volunteering works because it gives you the experience you need to land a job. If you are a seasoned MA, volunteering doesn't work. IMHO, it makes you look weak.

Absolutely not. My experience tells me volunteering should be noted. It just fits on a scale between a senior and a person who can't find a job. Makes sense.

Hi Hilda: with a MA you can do just about anything your heart desires. Volunteering at hospitals will not guarantee that you will get a job if you don't even know what sort of work you are going for.
In most healthcare arenas, people need certifications and state board licenses. That is expensive; but you will earn more and you will always have work.
If you can find work outside a hospital environment, think about working as a counselor or case manager helping drug and alcohol addicted men and women in residential settings.
You could also go and speak to a good reference librarian who is knowledgable and highly connected to today's current trends.
Think about working in school systems; but, first of all---try to figure out just what you want to do. Then narrow it down to being a follower or a leader on the job.
Many residential programs hire program managers. Look up these jobs by reading what agencies and organizations are seeking. Go to Indeed.com and you will find a wealth of jobs there.
It also dependes on where you live. Most job seekers waste valuable time applying to the wrong places. Read up on their budget. If they are non-profits and hire people through grants they get, they may not be in a position to pay their workers more.
Having a masters degree will not determine that you make more money; and many recruiters today have a high school diploma or a GED
You could look at colleges, universities where MA people work as secretaries or Clerks and they earn good salaries with full benefits and also get to take courses tuition free.
It is always best to sit down and talk with professionals who work in the field. You can approach people if you ask nicely when they are on lunch, or you can also help in places that help lost and missing women and children (Exploited)
There are banks to work in for now if you are accurate and have a decent credit standing because many employers today check on our credit standing.
If you dare to go through the hard process that is worth it by getting hired....Look at federal jobs and follow their directions to the letter. They are always seeking federal employees.
Veterans programs need good people. Decide if you want to work in one place or numerous places; if you want to drive in the "field" and visit people in their homes. What age and populations you wish to serve.
It isn't always the money people go after, it is the mission to make some people happier and well---having a purpose that is helping a community and families is always a good thing.
I also know that Child and Family Services and places like In-Patient Therapist are always being recruited. They will train and you need a masters degree.
Working with a team and by yourself is also something you should always consider and if you must work weekends or not.
Working in a restaurant will always give you hours. Because, "everybody's got to eat" regardless of how good or bad the economy. Good blessings to you

I began volunteering when I was in my second to last year of completing my AAS in Nursing.l. The VP of nursing at the hospital I volunteered in was kind enough to meet with me but told me I needed to have at least one year's experience. I couldn't get a job until one year later and it was out of state. I had to move my kids with me just so I could get the experience.

check with eldercare facilities in your area for CNA positions. Most have in house classes for certification and along with your other studies will add miles to your resume and networking with Doctors and Hospitals in your area

Yes! Volunteering is an excellent way to impress employers. It's worked for me!

I was volunteering at the public library and people there started providing me with job leads and referrals.

Hi Hilda that's a good way to get your foot in the door and once your in than u can choose what department you really wanna work in

Hida, you go girl! you can learn from school, you can learn from a mentor, you can even learn from watching, all are good! But on the job time where you can learn by making mistakes on your own, and know that is not the way, and improve each and every day, by figuring out by your own experience the better way to do each task, not by just being told. GOOD LUCK!!! it is with out parallel.
Yes volunteer is an excellent way to gain experience sometimes where you volunteer at they may even hire you. They did me that way and I'm still building knowledge Thur volunteering. Hi
