I shop several times a week at my corner grocery store so I figured I might as well work there right? Well, I spoke in person to the assistant manager who kept telling me to come in the next week because a new store was being built in the next town, and they didn't have a tally yet of who was going to the new store and who was staying. Well, I went back again in two weeks like she requested and she replied, "Gee, has it been that long yet", and I assured her it had. Then she said they were not hiring yet and to look for the "hiring now" sign to be displayed in the window. OK, so I waited until it was up, and came back again, and she tells me the hiring manager is on vacation, and to come back the next week on Monday. I came back on Monday dressed to the nines for an interview, and what do you suppose I saw? Two employees taking down the hiring now sign!! I honestly felt like crying my eyes out. I asked one random cashier there if the manager was back yet, and she sheepishly told me that he actually had been gone for quite a while!! I then asked her to find me a manager, and then I told him that the assistant manager kept telling me to come back for four weeks, and then he proceeds to tell me that they had just finished hiring people that morning. He tells me that if any of the employees don't make it through training that he'll call me, and that I could reapply in two months. I told him I needed a job weeks ago. I asked him if I was too old (I'm only 63) and I'm in great physical shape. Of course he said I wasn't, but it really makes you wonder since most of the front cashiers were very young. All I wanted was to be a bag lady (no pun intended). In other words I was applying for the bagger position. I'm find looking for a job is not what it used to be, and all the rules have changed. Has anyone out there ever had this happen to them? My Aunt told me to keep going back because they probably just wanted to see if I was really interested in the job, and then my best friend told me they just didn't want me. You would think I had three heads or something. I've been told I'm a very friendly and attractive person, and friendly is what they asked for in their on-line application. Why didn't they just come out and tell me the truth instead of leading me on for weeks?

I know it sounds easy to say that maybe you wouldn't want to work for somrlike that anyway, but that stings! I have a prosthetic and it shows when I walk. No matter how confident I am, I can always tell that look that says they have decided I can't do the desk job I am applying for. So frustrating! But show the next job how strong and amazing you are!

Hi Barbara, it honestly sounds like it was them and NOT you. That person you spoke to from the very start did not even seem like they knew what was going on. Unfortunately it seems they forgot you completely and also the fact that they were even hiring. It doesn't sound like a professional place to work and it's a blessing you avoided it. Sadly this does happen quite a lot. They are working and busy and sometimes forget about you. It's not to hurt your feelings and I am so sorry that you felt like crying : ( but just know that you can apply to other jobs and move on from this. It's happened to me too and it's frustrating!! Here are some [jobs] (http://www.jobcase.com/jobs/search?q=grocery+store&l=Largo+FL&r=25&ex=1&group=&sources%5B%5D=CB&sources%5B%5D=ID&sources%5B%5D=GD&sources%5B%5D=JC) in your area! Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help. Stay strong and keep your head held high, you are amazing!!
This is why we never should put all of our eggs in one basket. Two or at least one backup plan!
