I am a retired cosmetic dentist. I've had multiple jobs prior to dental school. As a kid, I worked in my father's restaurant doing odd jobs. I worked in high school as a busboy and restaurant kitchen helper including scrubbing pots and pans., I worked to put myself through college and started my career right out of dental school. I am a veteran of the Navy where I learned to be a dental lab technician. There has not been a time I wasn't working until I suffered a stroke which ended my career of 30+ years. It resulted in me losing my practice(long story), losing my home, having to file bankruptcy, losing my wife, and ending up in a senior assisted living community relying on Social Security income and VA assistance benefit which leaves me short at the end of the month. It left me paralyzed on my left side so I only have one good arm and hand to use and my left leg is weak so standing for more than a few minutes causes me pain. I am blessed, though, that I can walk (using a cane), I can talk, think and function quite well despite the disabilities. I'm now finding myself needing to supplement my meager income in order to make ends meet and to stay in this facility.
