Need help

I have a Theft of Property 2nd Degree felony from 8 yrs ago. I have 15 yrs exp as a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant with an Associate Degree but my license to practice was revoked as a result of my felony. I met with the P.T. board & was told only way to get license back would be to get an expungement and retake the boards. I filed for an expungement over 2 yrs ago. The process typically takes 18 mths. When i called recently to check on it, i was asked did i have a lawyer. When i said no, they told me they were 5 yrs behind. The last 8 yrs Ive had jobs as a cashier(my drawer was never a penny off), grocery store bakery/deli worker, and currently clean houses to support me and my daughter. I live in a small town and people here will actually come up to me and say to my face that Im not living up to my potential! Im already dealing with almost crippling depression because Ive lost my boyfriend, my father, and my brother all who died in the last 2 years. 2 wks ago, i got a phone call from the post office saying I was their selection for a custodial position i interviewed for 2 mths ago. I put my felony on my application and also on the background check that i initiated 2 wks ago. I went immediately to take the drug test when instructed to do so. But here i am once again 2 wks later and no word from supposedly a job offer. Its very hard not to get discouraged when you land a job from the interview, your talents, and your references....then a company that doesnt even know anything about you does a background check.. and makes a recommendation not to hire you. And people wonder why single moms have to get on welfare. Can't take much more rejection.....8 yrs of it is about all i can take

Melanie, don't get discouraged!! Other's would have given up a long time ago nut you've been doing everything possible to go beyond your current situation. You sound like a strong person so keep pushing forward and have faith that the light at the end of the tunnel will begin to show itself soon! FYI.. the USPS is notorious for a lengthy hiring process. That's a foot in the door for bigger and better opportunities.

Hello, One thing you can do is always have a resume and cover letter, staple it together (cover letter first), and then take them to every interview. Put on the bottom of your resume your references and then explain in short detail your background problems and the wait you are having to go through tho get it expounged from your record. They actually read the resume and cover letter in front of you at the interview, so they will know everything going on and then just be blunt but not to blunt and explain that you really need the job. That you are very qualified and ask that they look over the past and look toward the future career you can have with the company. Explain that you can be a very great addition to their organization. I am sure that will work. You just have to be as blunt as they are and not go in nervous. Trust me....managers are like dogs....they can since the fear in you...lol

Hi Melanie: I'm so sorry you're going through this right now. Have you tried calling the post office to follow up on your application? Or have they specifically said they're not going to hire you? It sounds like a really tough situation you're going through, but hopefully Jobcase can help connect you to the advice and job leads you need to pull through. Keep your head up and focusing on your daughter. Make a commitment to apply for a certain number of jobs each day. Also follow up on all your applications. Check to see if there are any lawyers in your area who'd consider working with you to get your record expunged for free, or for a very small cost. Keep us in the loop, okay? We care about you!
