Life on the road...

I'm thinking of applying for a job with CRST. I don't have a wife or kids, so I don't have family to be worried about. I'm still worried about being on the road constantly. Can I get any feedback about what it's like and what I should look out for?

You can get a job with Morpho Trust. They train you and there's possibility for as much travel as you want.Google them and see what you think.

How do you feel about camping ? Traveling! Driving truck is like an endless camping trip, only you just get to see the freeways. You eat a lot of fast food, it is had to keep yourself healthy with exercise, just no time or facilities. You have to learn how.to manage your time, and keep your paper work organized. Throw your stuff in a storage shed and go for it, your not home enough to bother with paying rent.

Don't go with CRST. One of the worst companies out there. I've been a trucker for 30 years

Hi, Jason. The restaurants at truck stops no longer serve breakfast, lunch and dinner anytime but are now franchises such as McDonald's and only serve breakfast at certain times and burgers the rest of the time. This can be irritating when 7am is like 8pm for you, so keep plenty of healthy snacks in your cooler! Also, take advantage of their truckers' lounges where you can shower, rest and associate with other truckers. Much as you might like being by yourself, you all need this community. Good luck!

Depending on your personality, it can be rough. At first, it seems just great, but then, it gets a little bit lonely. You work long days, the pay isn't great and you always sleep in the truck. If you think you can handle that, then go for it. Just remember, if you are stuck overnight somewhere hot or cold, you are going to hate it. They really don't like you to idle the truck to keep the A/C or heater on. Food for thought.

Safety should always be your number 1 priority but when your hauling merchandise cross country on a mile rate then the temptation is to accumulate long distances to maximize pay. Know your limits and don't fall asleep on the road.

Hi Jason: Great question! I'm not a driver myself, but I know about a few trucking forums where drivers talk about balancing driving with family. Check out my favorite: http://www.truckingtruth.com
