Looking for a more creative job

I work at a supermarket but I'm trying to transition into an entry level graphic design job. I've had no luck and I'm having a hard time standing out, especially since I've never held a job in graphic design before. I have a certificate, but no degree. Sometimes I feel like these employers discriminate against anyone without a degree. What could I do to stand out to employers more?

Hey Tara,

From a fellow designer, this is a typical struggle when you're first getting your career going. My advice to you is to focus on your strengths and your portfolio. Even if you don't have real business-world examples of designs to show, make some up. Mock up a website, brochure, poster, or any forms of media that you may be interested in and add these to your portfolio. Even though they aren't real business-world projects, they're a great way to show potential employers your skill and ability, despite your lack of experience. There are employers out there that will hire based on the quality of your portfolio alone. So, keep at it and good luck!
