Career Change

Hi Everyone, I am a first time poster and would like to hear other people experiences with my question. Has anyone here successfully or not successfully change careers? I am thinkning about doing this but I am over 40 and I know how hard it is to start over from scratch. I was wondering what advice or suggestions other people might have that they can pass on.

Thank you, Sandra Behrens

Well, I think that everyone at your age group undergoes a life changing employment situation that may or may not cause you to seek another employer. All this can make or break the success of your decision to do so. Ok, I'll give you an example, I was a material manager with a medical manufacturing company.I was one of the first employees there. I successfully progressed from clerk to buyer/planner to material planning to manager. I was employed at this company for 16 years..I was offered to relocate to Florida where the company that bought us was going to move our operations.. I did not want to leave California. So I took my severance and began to look.for a new employer.. I answered an add for a third shift supervisor position at one of our previous vendors. Turns out to be a staffing company! I had never been a temp in my life. The interviewer asked me why I wasn't returning to medical manufacturing, then she excused herself and returned with the owner of the company. What he told me, I would remember for the rest of my career. If you want to be successful in a changed industry, follow these guidelines: First, accept the fact that you will not being making the same income and you don't have the same authority. Next, list all of your transferable skills. Buy this I mean systems application experience, range of authority, skills in management, projects that have your contributions. Communication protocols, conflict resolution. Emanate your M.S.A.s made, saved & achieve. Communicate what value you bring to this environment. Last, never, but never stop learning. My experience grew into a career in recruiting and customer service. I used my knowledge in manufacturing and applied it to seek quality candidates. Great luck to you.

If you go very far with your career it is good that you do not change, but if you do not like that career you should look for the career you like
