Still haven't received my Coronavirus relief money
Jump to section

We’ve been talking about #Coronavirus relief money since March, and there are still so many that haven’t yet received it. If you haven’t received it, here are a few things you can do:

STEP 1: Double check that you qualify for the payment.

STEP 2: Check the IRS site for your payment status.

Think you qualify but haven't seen the money yet?

  • Remember that the government can intercept your payment if you owe back child support (you should receive a letter if that happens)

  • If the IRS has invalid or incomplete information, this could be another source of delay or non-payment, specifically:

When the IRS has your bank information

For those of you lucky enough to have shared your bank info with the IRS by May 13th - you are most likely to have Economic Impact Payment (EIP) money directly deposited into your bank account. However, if the IRS had already started processing your payment before you updated that information, then you will receive the EIP by mail, which takes approximately 15 days.

If the bank info they have on file is no longer valid because you have closed your account or a temporary account was issued by your tax preparer for your 2019 (or 2018) filing, the money will be returned to the government for reprocessing. The IRS will then issue you a paper check to your last known mailing address.

When the IRS does NOT have your bank information

At this point it is very likely that the IRS will be issuing you a paper check or an EIP prepaid debit card.

Paper checks

Paper checks started going out in late May and into June, but if you had any of the delay scenarios mentioned above, it may take longer.

Prepaid debit cards

Approximately 4 million Americans will be receiving The Economic Impact Payment Card, a prepaid debit card, managed by Money Network Financial, LLC and issued by Treasury’s financial agent, MetaBank®, N.A. If you receive a card, it should come in a plain white envelope from “Money Network Cardholder Services.” **Don't mistake this for junk mail! ** Please go to the EIP card FAQs for information or to request a free replacement, call (800) 240-8100, press option 2 when prompted.

Still have questions on the Economic Impact Payment?

The IRS has created an Economic Impact Payment Information Center that is updated every day. Remember that the IRS will never call, text, email or reach out to you on social media for your bank account information - so be aware and be careful about scams.

We know it hasn't been easy for folks who continue to wait for this much needed funding, but hope you find this article helpful. Share your thoughts in the comments below.

My check was supposed to be direct deposited on May 13. My bank returned it on the 8th because it couldn't identify my husband who isn't on the account. I'm still waiting on it. Any idea how long it will take to get it?
