How to keep your unemployment payments coming
Jump to section

My Unemployment Claim Was Approved — What Happens Next?

If your unemployment claim has been approved, you can begin receiving benefit payments. These payments are meant to provide temporary financial support while you look for new work.

Even after approval, most states require you to continue meeting certain eligibility requirements in order to keep receiving unemployment benefits. If those requirements are not met, payments may stop.

What Do You Have to Do to Keep Receiving Benefits?

After your initial claim is approved, states typically require ongoing actions—often called certifying or filing continued claims—to confirm that you remain eligible.

These steps help your state unemployment agency verify that you are still unemployed or partially unemployed and actively working toward reemployment.

Common Requirements to Maintain Eligibility

While rules vary by state, many unemployment programs include requirements such as the following:

File Weekly or Biweekly Certifications

Most states require you to file a claim on a weekly or biweekly basis. This process usually involves confirming:

  • Your employment status
  • Any work performed
  • Any earnings received
  • Your availability for work

Missing a certification can delay or stop payments.

Remain Unemployed or Partially Unemployed Through No Fault of Your Own

To stay eligible, you generally must:

  • Be unemployed, or
  • Be working significantly reduced hours, depending on your state’s definition

If you earn income while receiving unemployment, you are typically required to report those earnings. In some states, reported earnings may reduce your benefit amount rather than end benefits entirely.

Meet Work Search Requirements (When Applicable)

Many states require claimants to actively search for work, though:

  • The type of work search activity required varies
  • Some workers may have modified or waived requirements based on their situation

States may ask you to report job search activities as part of your certification.

Accept Suitable or Reasonable Work

States generally expect claimants to accept suitable work if it is offered.

What counts as “suitable” depends on factors such as:

  • Your prior experience and training
  • Wages compared to your previous job
  • Work schedule and commuting distance

Declining a job offer may affect eligibility depending on your state’s rules and the reason for refusal.

Register With State Employment or Workforce Services (If Required)

Some states require claimants to:

  • Register with a state employment or workforce agency
  • Participate in reemployment or training services

If required, completing these steps can be necessary to continue receiving benefits.

How Do You Know Your State’s Exact Requirements?

The unemployment app and questionnaire is not at all user friendly! It made me a depressed stressed out mess within 2 days to no success. I believe it may be designed to do just that though.

I was approved and receiving my unemployment benefits ! I had found and started my new job and because I did not attend a Re-Employment assistance (class) because I was working they red flagged me so I won’t qualify until I do so or it’s past 9/16/23! So now I’m fighting for the past month to receive my benefits! Letter states I qualify but certification week is a disqualifying week for the past month

I’ve been waiting on a determination since June 2020, I don’t see how they expected someone to go that long without an income.

Yes my stepdad lost his battle due to covid-19, about 2weejs ago I've been my mom's primary provider she also ended up with it by the grace of GOD she defeated it I worked a job one day and was off the next 3. When I filled my weekly certification I made a mistake and put leave of absence well I called myself changing it to family obligation, I've turned in documents from my mother's doct and my employer stating I was taking of the schedule to provide health for my mother to get her health appetite, cleaning, everything that I most definitely don't mind doing and proud of it all but for the last month I've been having a issue on my fill I'm in desperate need of assistance desperately like before this month is out thank you all and sorry for the long conversation it made me feel better to get some of it off my chest stay blessed
