What you need to apply for a driver job at Uber

To apply as a driver for Uber, you should meet all the minimum requirements and be able to prove you have an acceptable level of in-state driver’s insurance.

Minimum requirements to be an Uber driver

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Have at least one year of licensed driving experience in the US (3 years if you are under 23 years old)
  • Have a valid US driver’s license
  • Use an eligible 4-door vehicle

Required documents in the application process

  • A valid Social Security card
  • Proof of residency in your city, state, or province (e.g., passport, current utility bill)
  • Proof of vehicle in-state car registration. The vehicle registration can be in someone else’s name
  • Proof of vehicle in-state car insurance in your name if you plan to drive your own car (opposed to renting a car through Uber)
  • A profile photo
    • Photo must be a forward-facing, centered photo including the driver’s full face and top of shoulders, with no sunglasses
    • Must be a photo only of the driver with no other subject in the frame, well-lit, and in focus; it cannot be a driver’s license photo or other printed photograph

Online Screening / background check to drive for Uber

An online driver screening - a background check - is required as part of your application. The check is conducted by using your Social Security number to access your criminal records and driving history.

  • Uber uses a company called Checkr for the initial screening and for the initial and routine background and driving checks
  • Uber may also run additional checks to comply with changes in local laws or if they change their background check standards. Driving records and criminal history checks are paid for by Uber
  • Uber does not drug test its drivers nor do they run credit checks for applicants

To pass the Uber online screening

  • Applicants cannot have any major moving violations, such as 'driving under the influence' (DUI), 'driving while intoxicated' (DWI), or reckless driving, within the last seven years
  • Applicants cannot have more than three minor moving violations in the past three years, such as speeding tickets or failure to obey traffic laws
  • Applicants cannot be convicted of a felony, violent crime, or sexual offense within the last seven years

Vehicle requirements for Uber drivers

While many drivers have their own vehicle, you can apply to become an Uber driver without one. Begin the application and select 'I need a car' option. Applicants can consider leasing or renting a vehicle. Short-term rentals and popular peer-to-peer car sharing marketplaces like Turo or Getaround are acceptable options.

Depending on which service you plan to offer as a driver, there are certain requirements your vehicle must adhere to drive for Uber.

How to pass an Uber vehicle inspection

  • This can be completed at an Uber activation center or any state-licensed auto repair shop in your area. (If you already have a valid/non-expired inspection sticker, you can bypass this step)
  • Uber will conduct the inspection for free at their centers. If you choose to see your own mechanic, you are responsible for paying for the service charges (depending on where you go)
  • The Uber vehicle inspection checks the safety and mechanical features of your car, including the condition of your seat belts, lights, brakes, and tires

Vehicle registration and insurance requirements

The vehicle you plan to use for Uber must have license plates that match the state you intend to drive in as well as up-to-date registration tags. If your city lies on the border of another state, your vehicle may be eligible for an exception.

  • Some states will require you to display a decal on your vehicle, indicating that you are an Uber driver. Check to see if you need to display the Uber decal
  • As an Uber driver, you will need to have appropriate ridesharing car insurance. This is referred to as liability or ‘gap’ insurance
  • Your normal car insurance will not cover incidents that occur when your personal vehicle is being used to transport paying passengers. Uber offers ridesharing car insurance for drivers, but it is wise to fully research your insurance options before committing to one
  • UberSUV — In order to qualify as a UberSUV driver, you need to have a luxury SUV like a Cadillac Escalade Platinum or a Porsche Cayenne Turbo. You will also need a commercial driving license and insurance and to maintain a high Uber driver rating
  • UberBLACK — If you have a black luxury car, a high Uber driver rating, and a commercial driving license and insurance, UberBLACK is for you. Some cities require UberBLACK drivers to have airport permits
