Jump to section

Uber may be well-known as a ridesharing service, but its Uber Eats brand rounds out the top three on the list of most successful food delivery service companies in the United States. This on-demand food delivery service operates in over 500 cities nationwide.

We’ve compiled how to join the Uber Eats team quickly and successfully so that you can easily start earning extra income.

Requirements for applying to be an Uber Eats driver

Uber Eats divides its requirements based on what mode of transportation you will be using to make deliveries to customers.

**For every mode of transportation, all delivery drivers: **

  • Must have a valid social security number
  • Must own a smartphone that’s compatible with the Uber Driver app
  • Must have a valid checking account for direct deposits
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check

**Car delivery **

  • Meet the minimum age to drive in your city
  • Must have a 2-door or 4-door car that is 20 years old or newer with no major damages, dents, or missing parts
  • Must have proof of valid driver's license, registration, and vehicle insurance
  • Must have at least 1 - 3 years of driving experience depending on age

Scooter delivery

  • Must be 19 years or older
  • Must have a motorized scooter under 50cc that is 20 years old or newer
  • Must have proof of valid driver's license, registration, and vehicle insurance

**Bike delivery **

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must have a government-issued ID

When signing up, double-check to make sure that you choose the correct transportation method for how you will deliver orders.

1. Sign up for an account

To sign up as an UberEats driver, you will need to create an account with a username and password. You’ll be asked to enter personal information including:

  • Name
  • Contact information including email address and phone number
  • The cities or areas you want to deliver in. Click here to see the full list of cities that UberEats currently operates in.
  • Optional Invite Code (if applicable)

Make sure to thoroughly read both the “Terms of Use” and the “Uber Privacy Policy” to understand the terms of employment. Also, make sure you are aware you are consenting to automated SMS alerts and marketing communications before clicking the teal “Next” button.

2. Select your desired mode of transportation.

3. Authorize a background check

On the next step, click “Agree” to authorize a background check using your Social Security number.

4. Upload your Photo ID.

If you are a car or scooter driver, this will be labeled as the “Driver’s License” section. For bike drivers, this section is labeled “Photo ID.”

5. Upload proof of vehicle Insurance and registration.

For both car and scooter drivers, make sure to include make, model, year, VIN number, and license plate number, as well as the expiration date of the registration.

6. Upload your profile photo.

This should be a well-lit headshot of you with no hat or sunglasses. Note: It is not necessary to have a formal or professional headshot—any clear and straightforward picture will work. Try to ask a friend or family member if they can help, but a selfie will do in a pinch!

7. Download app

Upon approval of your background check, download the UberEats App through the Apple App Store or through Google Pay to begin accepting and making deliveries.

Frequently asked questions during the application process

If I am already an Uber rideshare driver, do I meet UberEats requirements to make food deliveries?

Yes! If you are already approved as a rideshare driver for Uber, you also meet all the necessary Uber Eats requirements. If you want to start delivering food between your ride requests, simply go to the “Driver Preferences” section of your Uber Driver app and switch on Uber Eats requests to begin accepting delivery requests. Uber openly encourages eligible drivers to also deliver for Uber Eats.

If I don’t own a vehicle or bike, can I make UberEats deliveries on foot?

Unfortunately, UberEats does not allow for deliveries to be made on foot.

How do I check the status of my sign-up?

When on the main sign-up page, scroll down to the “Have An Account? Log In” button. Login with the same email address and phone number that you used to sign up. If you’re missing any requirements, you’ll be prompted to complete your application. Otherwise, your status will appear.

UberEats states that the average hiring and onboarding process takes 1-2 weeks to become fully activated after you complete your sign-up and pass the background check. There is no required orientation and you can begin accepting delivery requests as soon as you are able.
