How to apply for a job at The Home Depot
Jump to section

Interested applicants can find local jobs to apply for Home Depot on Jobcase, or at careers.homedepot.com or in-store at an application kiosk. When you apply online at Home Depot you’ll have the opportunity to choose from several different service areas, including Retail, Supply Chain, Home Services, and Contact Center.

Minimum Age Requirement: All Home Depot employees must be at least 18 years old, unless given special permission by the state or a local Home Depot store.

Home Depot RMA pre-Interview Screen Tests

  • The Retail Management Assessment is a group of tests that are given to each possible candidate before the initial interview. The assessments are an overall aptitude test to determine whether you are a good fit for Home Depot. The last assessment is a basic mathematical test.

  • Situational Judgment Test (SJT): This assessment will test your ability to make judgment calls in particular situations. Composed of 50 questions, this assessment is set on the premise that you are the employer, and what you would like to see of your employees. There is great emphasis on prior customer service experience, as well as personal knowledge of Home Depot equipment, and merchandise. There will also be a section on where you will rank your ability to use certain equipment such as a cash register, or a forklift. You will rank your ability on a scale from beginner to expert.

  • Hogan-Style Personality Test: Here, the focus will be on the candidate’s attitude about working at Home Depot and personal work ethic. These questions are how Home Depot will determine your overall fit in the company. Home Depot values kind, courteous employees who take customer service seriously. Loyalty is also an important factor since Home Depot wants workers who are dedicated to their work and will stick around for some time.

  • Basic Math Concepts Test: This assessment will test you on your math ability, which is gauged at a junior high level.

Helpful application tips for The Home Depot

  • Anyone interested in a job with The Home Depot should submit a resume along with the application form.

  • Though not a requirement for most entry-level Home Depot jobs, a resume may set an applicant apart from the competition.

  • To improve hiring chances, an applicant should tailor the resume to the desired job with The Home Depot. The Home Depot often hires job candidates who excel in customer care, and applicants should use the resume to display customer service skills. To demonstrate strengths in customer service, an applicant should include a work history detailing past jobs, the duties involved, and noteworthy accomplishments in customer care.

  • Applicants lacking work experience may use the resume to list personal references and express the desire to assist customers

  • Most Retail positions require you to be able to lift around 80 pounds on average.

  • If you have back problems or are a smaller person and have trouble lifting heavy objects, make sure to check the job description and see if it requires you to lift a large amount of equipment.

  • Make sure to specify your desired schedule, because hourly employees (as all of the positions are) tend to have flexible hours, but only if you request it up front.

  • The Home Depot has set up a quiz that will help you Discover Your Fit, which will show you what position they recommend you apply for. This is a wonderful tool to point you in the right direction for a Home Depot position that is right for you.

Sample practice interview questions for a job at The Home Depot

  • Tell me about a time when you administered excellent customer service. What did you do and what was the end result?

  • How does your previous experience relate to the job you are applying for?

  • Tell me how you would handle a difficult customer? What was the situation and what did you do to help the customer?

  • What would you do if you witnessed another associate demonstrating poor customer service?

  • Tell me about a time you had to come up with a quick solution to a problem. What was the impact of that solution?

The Home Depot also highly suggests using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) approach when answering competency-based questions during interviews. Think of it like a mini essay when you answer a question like, "Tell me about a time you had to come up with a quick solution to a problem. What was the impact of that solution?"

S - Situation (how, when, where, with whom?):

“While I was employed at Weaver Bros. last summer

T - Task (Describe the situation or the task you were faced with.)

"I was given the task of controlling the stock inventory system."

A - Action (What action did YOU take?)

"I would look at factors such as when the stock was last ordered, what it was used for and how often it was used. I worked out a method of streamlining the paperwork involved in this process and redesigned the relevant forms, which I then submitted to my manager."

R - Result (What results did you achieve/conclusions did you reach/what did you learn from the experience?)

"My ideas were accepted and implemented and a 15% reduction in stock levels was achieved.”

As for the statement above; "Anyone interested in a job with The Home Depot should submit a resume along with the application form." I brought my resume to the interview, even though I knew it was irrelevant to the position I had apply for ( Freight and receiving associate) but definitely an idea of previous employment history and educational background and the interviewer who is also our manager told me "Oh I don't have to see that" and I replied "well I think it would help you at least know more about my educational background and work history" .He replied "Is okay , you're good" . So my question is Why submit a resume along with the application?
