Enacting change from home

There’s a growing need for citizens to make their voices heard regarding the lack of financial relief for Americans, however the current public health crisis makes organizing in person difficult. Learn why your voice is needed, what you can accomplish and the steps you can take to voice your concerns, all from the safety of your home.

Why your voice is needed

We’re all just trying to make it in today’s world. With multiple stressors bearing down at once, however, “making it” can feel like an impossible task. Chances are that you know someone who had their health impacted by COVID, or who was forced into unemployment because of the pandemic. Maybe that person is you. The burdens that the coronavirus pandemic has placed on our society ripple out to every facet of life. With these burdens, however, leaders have been slow to ensure that Americans are supported financially through these life-altering events.

With a majority of people impacted and solutions slow-coming or insufficient, it’s time to add your voice to the growing number of citizens who need their financial stability back.

What it means to speak up

Many who are speaking up about financial relief are simply yearning for basic abilities, like the ability to pay bills, feed their families, have a safe and stable home to shelter in. These are not radical ideas, and for most of us they represent the bare basics of a comfortable life.

When people stop having the ability to provide these basics for themselves and there’s no acceptable solution in place to help, getting active becomes a necessity to accelerating solutions. Speaking up ensures that the suffering felt by many Americans is heard and addressed by leading bodies. Every person who participates makes up an essential part of enacting change.

How you can get active (safely)

Being active in your community looks a little different when you're doing it from home. So how can you raise your voice remotely?

Here are some options…

1. Call or email your state representative

Did you know you can directly reach out to the government officials who represent you in Congress? Make yourself heard by reaching out to their office directly and tell them exactly how they can best support you. By hearing your story, your representatives will be able to better understand and serve the needs of the citizens they represent.

2. Sign or create a virtual petition

If you don’t feel comfortable reaching out directly, you can sign a petition and add your voice to thousands more like you who all want the same thing. Change.org is the leading website for virtual petitions about a variety of topics and its popularity means its virtual petitions have been a major part in bringing awareness and major change to a number of hot-button issues. You can search their petitions or create your own petition here.

3. Vote!

By far, the most effective way to effect change is to vote for the candidates who most closely represent your interests. See resources to request a mail-in ballot here so you can vote safely this election season. When you vote, be sure you do so with the full knowledge that the candidates you select are aligned with your views and values.

What change would make the biggest impact on your life?

When employers/business owners claim no one wants to work because of Biden's policies i.e. enhanced unemployment leftover stimulus businesses are prevaricating, some in our congregation are former inmates, when they apply those so called desperate business owners choose not to hire them, after a conditional offer of employment because under ban the box only after that type of offer is given then a background check can be performed!
