If you're considering starting a career at Dollar Tree, you should know a few things.

This article will cover what you need to know about working at Dollar Tree, from the application process to the salary and the skills you'll need to succeed.

What is Dollar Tree?

Dollar Tree is a discount retail store chain that's been in operation since 1986. The company operates over 16,000 stores across 48 states and the District of Columbia. Dollar Tree is headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia.

The company offers a wide variety of merchandise, including food, health and beauty products, household goods, and seasonal items.

Dollar Tree is owned by the same company as Family Dollar, another discount retail store chain. These two companies operate as separate entities, though there is some overlap in the merchandise they offer. These retail stores strive to provide customers with a "treasure hunt" shopping experience, meaning every visit is an opportunity to find something new.

Dollar Tree customers are typically value-conscious shoppers looking for a good deal. The company's target market is shoppers looking to save money, including families, seniors, and frugal shoppers. Thus, the stores carry a wide variety of items, so there is something for everyone.

The company strives to provide its shoppers with a fun and easy shopping experience. The stores are typically small, so they're easy to navigate. The merchandise is organized by category, which makes it easy to find what you're looking for.

Once you've decided on a position, the next step is to fill out an application.

How to apply for a job at Dollar Tree

Filling out the Dollar Tree application is the first step in the hiring process. The application will ask for your unique personal information, employment history, and education. It's important to be honest when filling out the application and to provide accurate information.

When completing the employment history section, be sure to include any relevant experience you have. Even if you don't have experience in the exact position you're applying for, any customer service or retail experience will be beneficial.

The education section is where you will list your high school diploma or GED. If you have any college experience, be sure to include that as well.

The next step is to submit your updated resume. Your resume should include your work history, education, and any relevant skills or qualifications. If you don't have much work experience, that's okay — just focus on highlighting your skills and qualifications.

How does the Dollar Tree job interview work?

After you've submitted your application and resume, a hiring manager will look over your details. If your skills and experience match the position's requirements, the next step will be a job interview.

The interview process can be different between stores, so yours may be conducted over the phone or in person. Either way, you'll speak to someone from the management team and explain why you'd be a good fit for the position.

Before the interview, do some company research. There's a lot of information in this article, but you can also visit Dollar Tree's website and social media pages to learn more.

If your interview is in-person, make sure you come prepared. Get there early and be conscious of your body language. Business casual is the recommended dress code for most job interviews. However, if you're applying for a corporate or management role, consider business professional attire instead.

For those who have a phone interview scheduled, find a quiet space that's free from distractions so that you can focus on your conversation with the interviewer.

  • What do you know about Dollar Tree?

  • Why do you want a career with Dollar Tree?

  • Tell us how you'd deal with an unhappy customer.

  • How does your experience match this role?

  • Do you have any retail experience?

  • Where do you see yourself in five years?

  • Why should we hire you?

  • What is your availability?

  • Have you ever worked in the customer service industry?

Helpful tips for Dollar Tree applicants

Don't stress or rush through the application process. Double-check your information and make sure your contact details are correct. If this is your first time filling out an application, ask a friend for help proofreading your application.

Another helpful tip is to be prepared for the interview. This means knowing your resume information inside and out and being able to speak confidently about your qualifications.

Lastly, don't forget that the application process is just one step in the hiring process. The interview is just as important, if not more so. Keep this in mind, and stay positive throughout the entire process.

Does Dollar Tree do a background check?

Once you've submitted your application, the next step is to complete a background check. This is standard for all positions at Dollar Tree, so there's no need to worry.

The background check will likely include a criminal history check. The company will also verify your employment history and education. The background check is not meant to exclude or disqualify applicants — it's simply a way for the company to ensure that its employees are trustworthy and reliable.

If you are concerned about anything that may arise during your background check, it's best to be upfront about it. You can explain the situation and why you believe it shouldn't disqualify you from the position.

On average, the entire hiring process at Dollar Tree, from application to offer, takes about two weeks. However, this may vary depending on the position and the time of year. With that said, the best way to ensure a quick and easy process is to be prepared, honest, and patient.

Dollar Tree is an equal-opportunity employer, so you will have as much chance as anyone else. There are many positions available, so take your time in choosing which one interests you the most. A new career at Dollar Tree could be just what you've been looking for.

Does Dollar Tree do a drug test?

For most positions, Dollar Tree will expect you to pass a drug screening check. Like the background check, this step comes after you've been offered a job but before your first shift.

The most common method is a standard drug test through a urine sample. Sometimes, you'll have to provide a mouth swab instead. If something does show up, it may impact your chances of getting hired.

Depending on local laws, there may also be random drug tests in the workplace. Let's say you've been injured at work or an employee has been acting erratically, for instance. These may be reasons for Dollar Tree to conduct an employee drug test.

Employee benefits and perks at Dollar Tree

Dollar Tree provides a comprehensive benefits package to its employees that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage. The company also offers a comprehensive employee assistance program, a travel assistance program, virtual medical visits, and a wellness program.

Additionally, employees are given paid time off and access to discounts on various products and services. Let's look at the Dollar Tree benefits in more detail.

Don't have time for traditional appointments? Dollar Tree offers virtual medical visits to its employees. This benefit allows employees to consult with a doctor from the comfort of their own homes. Virtual medical visits can be extremely convenient, especially for those who have busy schedules.

Even with health insurance, unexpected medical expenses can put a strain on your household budget. Fortunately, Dollar Tree lets employees put money aside in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or a Health Savings Account (HSA) to help them pay for these bills.

Financial benefits

Some employees at Dollar Tree are given paid time off (PTO). This benefit allows you to step away from professional work obligations to relax and recharge.

PTO can be used for vacation, personal days, sick days, or any other purpose. Being able to take time away from work for personal issues, emergencies, or simply to enjoy life is a valuable perk. There are also options for unpaid leave.

There are other financial benefits worth mentioning for Dollar Tree employees. For example, the company has options for life insurance, as well as short- and long-term disability insurance. So if you're unable to work due to injury, you'll still have some money coming in.

Dollar Tree supports you both now and in the future. The 401(k) retirement plan comes with a generous dollar-for-dollar match. This match is for the first 5% of your contributions.

Because the 401(k) is pre-tax income, growing the balance of your retirement savings account can make good financial sense. When you do retire, the money will be there for you.

Employee programs

The employee assistance program at Dollar Tree supports employees with any personal or professional issues that arise.

This benefit can be extremely helpful in times of need. Many workers feel more comfortable knowing that there is someone to talk to if they're ever feeling overwhelmed or stressed.

There's also a travel assist program. This provides employees with 24/7 access to a team who can help with anything from planning a trip to dealing with an emergency while away from home. There are few things worse than being stranded in a foreign country with no one to turn to. This benefit can give employees peace of mind while traveling.

Unique benefits

Dollar Tree employees can access discounts on various products and services. These discounts can be used for things like groceries, travel, and entertainment. Having access to these discounts can help employees save money on everyday expenses.
